My friend is like freaking the fuck out cuz she got arrested for a minor shoplifting charge under $150. She's like "I could go to prison and blah blah blah"

No, you won't. You're a 19 year old white girl in the suburbs with no record with like the smallest shoplifting charge you can get. You're probably going to get a fine and maybe some community service or something. It sucks and it's shitty to have on your record but it's not a big deal. I probably know dozens of people with that on their record and they never sent a night in jail for it.

I was at the mall with my friend when we were sixteen and she debo'd a $50 swimsuit. Little white girl, minor charge, she got 3 months probation and a small fine, record was expunged after probation was completed.

I think the eastern Mediterranean is a ring of fire that will be the first theater of class conflict when the crisis of capital deepens, since they are already hotbeds of working class rage or popular uprising, not to mention the possibility of a new Palestinian intifada.

My stepmom is on my ass right now about how I haven't been to the dentist in over a year and apparently you're supposed to go in for cleaning every 6 months (isn't that what a toothbrush is for?). She says it should only be like $10-$20 with insurance but that's $10-$20 I don't have, to go to the dentist which I hate more and more as I get older. I also got this $83 doctor bill for a simply blood test that I can't pay along with my money situation being even more fucked now than normal. Why the fuck isn't this stuff free?

Graduation was a few days ago and I still find myself thinking about it. The ceremony was the culmination of several years of effort and showed how hard-work is rewarded in some manner.

Held during the evening I sat through several speakers preaching the typical line to graduates: “you have done something special… be proud of yourself… you can do college… those with college degrees earn more… ect…” While inspiring it was a boring tirade all the same. Nonetheless the time came where I was allotted to speak; talking with slow grace and emotion I ably communicated my speech. With it being the shortest of any of the speakers I found afterwords that it was probably the best of the speakers since many people came up to me afterwards thanking and congratulating me.

In addition to speaking I won a scholarship, along with several other awards including entrance into the National Adult Education Honor Society, as well as the prize for possessing the top scores in my class. Realizing I was one of the most highly praised students gave me great pride and indeed only was underscored by my favored grandmother and best friend not being there to witness.

After the graduation, at the snack banquet, the superintendent of the school system came up to inform me that not only was she deeply moved by my speech but that a certain policy regarding the passing and failure of classes (one which gave me some trouble when in Day School) had since been eliminated and that it was a draconian policy. Such event came as a relief to me as out of even desperate situations can emerge a better way; the proof was in the pudding I suppose.

So the night in all was one of splendor. I enjoyed myself. The night left me with an added reservoir of steam for the approaching college semester and a new found respect for my aid who helped me through this long process.

I lent this dude my bong a while back. Called him up a week later to get it back, I was like you can keep it for a week. No answer. Avoided me for a month. My friend was at the same party as him and I'd happened to try calling again, he goes "God, [PC] trying to get my bong!!" really loud and angsty-like. So I waited until that monday night and rolled up to his house 5-deep (he always had like 10-person smoke seshes on weeknights, I knew him pretty well because I'd been friends with his sister for years, so I was prepared for a brawl, it was a $200 bong), walked straight up through the back door and go "Where's my fucking bong." Dude says nothing, someone else there grabs it and brings it to me.

ikr i dont get the reason why people feel the need to go to the dentist all the goddamn time, i mean come on, all they do there is brush and floss your teeth for you and charge you money. the only reason a person should go to the dentist is if they need to have a cavity filled or some other kind of dental work done.

You only need to look at the fact that he's friends with all of the fake-ass fascistic people pretending to be 'black civil rights movementeers against white supremacy' (who, by the way, did not give a flying fuck about people of colour being abused in other parts of the world after just stating that they did - bit of an early slip), and the fact that he kisses hitler ass in his 2008 posts, to conclude that the guy's someone from that godawful racist website.

I wouldn't even know what to say if I got into that debate. Surely as a person who can become pregnant you must be able to understand how awful it would be to get pregnant in a really hard situation where you couldn't or didn't want to raise a child? Unless she was just one of those crazy religious people who believe that getting pregnant through rape is "part of God's plan" or some bullshit.

I volunteered for overtime tomorrow because I am a fool. Turns out I need to drive out of state that day. I ask on Thursday if I can call out, and they said I can but they'll count it as a no-call no-show because I'm expected to commit when I volunteer for overtime. This warehouse is probably the easiest of all the ones in the area to work at but now I understand why their turnover rate is so high. They're absurdly strict on things that no other workplace would even sweat.

Oh and I found out that punching-in for temp workers is a total formality -- they don't even pay attention to the time the security guard puts down when you walk in. They just assume if you're marked as present without a strike for lateness or telling a lead that you didn't sign in, that you've been there the whole 10 hours. But while being late means a guard saw you walk in, the only way they'd ever know that you didn't clock in is if you snitch on yourself, which people do because they suggest that not clocking in would fuck up your pay.

Cannot wait until next weekend.

Yesterday at the library this guy came up to the desk with a book saying he had a problem with it. I had no idea what was coming next, maybe that he was going to complain about how the content of the book was inappropriate for children, which has happened before, but this was totally unexpected. He started off by saying that he'd spilled some water on the book, which didn't seem like too much of a problem, but then he went on to say he'd put it in the microwave on defrost to try to dry it out and ended up scorching the back cover because of the metal tag in the back.

Is it just me or does microwaving a book sound like an extremely weird/bad idea???

The disclaimer that appears when starting XCOM (the 2012 reboot of the series):

"The content of this videogame is fictional and is not intended to represent or depict an actual record of the events, persons, locations, or entities in the game’s setting. The makers and publishers of this videogame do not in any way endorse, condone or encourage engaging in any conduct depicted in this videogame."

Of course, it really is important to make absolutely clear that Firaxis does not endorse, condone or encourage shooting aliens in the face.

I was reading about that series last week...

I'm wondering if I'm too old to be playing video games. Thought about it lastnight in bed and today when I woke up and first thing went to the video game console. Wondered if I'm emotionally stunted, as in, Peter Pan complex or if it's normal for people in their 30's to be playing video games. I don't know, I can't stop playing Assassins Creed 3. I hadn't played video games for about a decade and on a whim went out and bought a playstation 3 last week. Not at all important. Is there an unspoken age limit on gaming these days?

My dad is 52 and plays video games, so I don't think there is an age limit.

If you like turn-based tactics, it's excellent. The reboot simplifies things a bit, but doesn't really dumb them down (they defanged the previously horrifying Chryssalids a bit, though). Just... don't get attached to things like individual soldiers, squads, countries... the game is unforgiving on serious difficulty settings, especially if you're an idiot like me who forgets to use overwatch.

"Emily, why are you a Trotskyist who receives funding from Gadaffi?".

Had an awesome conversation with my 15 year old cousin yesterday, he's totally on his way to becoming a great communist. I'm driving him somewhere and ask how he's doing. He starts talking about how he's worked 3 days in a row, all five hour shifts, at his dish washing job and that he hates it with a passion. I tell him imagine doing that 5 days a week, 8 hours a day, for the rest of your life until you retire. His response: "Fuck that. I'm just going to get rich so that I'll never have to work again." Then we had a good laugh, he's totally spot on, I'm proud of the little guy.

So I went to the library today and got the communist manifesto, another small book about Marx by Peter Singer, and 'A Socialist's Faith' (even though its by a non communist). Of course, my brother went through my stuff and saw it and asked when I became a communist. I said "its Marx" pointing at the book and then he just kinda mumbled off. Hm. Idiot.

Never apologize for posting office space clips.

But that's basically what it's like, except they don't tell me in person. They always post the schedule on Saturday, so I go in the little room and look at it, and it says that I have to come in the next two days for eight hour shifts, which wouldn't be so bad if I didn't find out about it the day before. It really doesn't help that Sunday is probably our busiest day.

I actually got lucky this week (four days off in a row) but I doubt it will last.

Raised my awareness of historical materialism and economic determinism, from the economic history side of things.

my dissertation taught me a lot about the transition from feudalism to capitalism, and how much it is understudied and undervalued by marxist scholars.

Jeez, I've been so busy lately that it is actually surreal to be able to spend some time on RevLeft (of course I no longer have a home internet connection so that is part of it as well). So much has happened in the couple months that it is difficult to take in so I will simply say this: college entry preparation is a busy shit load.

Attended my university's week long summer program which introduced me to the basics of campus life while meeting a quarter of the incoming class. There I met a guy who lived in my area. We got along well and requested to be each others roommates for the Fall.

Is strange since we are so different: him a Catholic Baptist who doesn't agree with two men living together, and I, a gay atheist. He, a anti-republican/democrat party independent and I a Leftist. He is very extroverted while I am introverted. He comes from an "upper middle class" family I on the lower end of proletarian. Minimal age difference (he almost 19... I think, while I am nearly 21).

I dunno though we get along very well and spent the better part of the week together and have hung out since returning home. We are planning to go dorm shopping later this month for things we will need for the Fall. During the upcoming Fall semester we are even planning to host a improve comedy radio show at the school's station. So it is all good.

Other than that Financial Aid is being a pain in the ass. Will not be able to get help with that until later next week at the earliest. Money and debt is always on my mind but I try my best to minimize it since there is very little I can do about it one way or another (I am quite resigned to large debt).

Still other details to cover before heading off in the Fall: new glasses need to be ordered, shopping needs to be done, credit union account needs to be straightened out, last minute details finalized... etc. Just a bunch of busy work.

Anyways, lately I have been feel a bit tense about the upcoming Fall semester because I (a) have no money to pay for tuition (debt, oh well) and (b) am afraid I will not be able to keep up my studies at a reasonable pace. More to the point, however, I am just hoping my roommate will be a decent guy to bunk with.

Now, I already ranted on about him previously but the thing I left out is this: he is a talker... like seriously man, he does nothing but run his fucking mouth all goddamn day long. He is one of those people who goes into a store and does the following-look around, talk with other customers, talk with the employees, talk some more... browse-talk some more... find what he wants to buy then talks with the cashier well past the time most normal people would leave. I on the other hand get what I need then get the fuck out of the place avoiding people like they have the Black Death (never know when someone might shoot up the place, after all).

He says he wants to dorm room door open when we are in the room chilling. I won't have a problem with this as I wouldn't mind making some new contacts but I told him there will be a limit on how much that friggin door can be open and by extension how much he can run his mouth.

Fall school shopping soon. I decided to pay for the dorm necessities with my own money gained from my upcoming birthday, the lawn sale we recently had, and the various amounts people owed me. He better be grateful but all the same I am going to have to keep him on track with responsible purchases when we are shopping.

Then there is that wretched Financial Aid form which still needs more blasted data (at the end of my rope here). If that form were a person I would have strangled it, cut it into pieces, and ditched its body in a river a long fucking time ago.

I guess you could say I am stressed.

From my experience they're fine; they just aren't quite as cheap as they seem because you still have to add on shipping, which can seem pretty exorbitant when the item costs less than a dollar and it's $4 added on.

I've never run into any problems, but in general I'd recommend looking carefully at the sellers for any used product.

She didn't ask though because she wanted to be hip or cool or keep a respoinable eye on her grandson but rather because she simply wanted someone to drink with. Obviously I declined (ignored her really).

Not doing really anything for my B-day. My roommate said he would pick me up in the afternoon and take me out for dinner at some fast food place, then we could go back to his place and discuss the Fall. My other friend might also take me out to eat; I hope he does because I enjoy discussing things with him now that he focuses less on abstract situations and more on reality. I think it would be nice to have a swell dinner with him before I left for college anyway but we will see what he does: I make it a point not to ask anything of my friends when it comes to special events.

Yesterday was my 21st birthday (I feel so old). No wild drinking sprees with friends or grandmas but it was well spent all the same.

I spent the better part of 48 hours with my roommate (at his house) where we hung out and slept. When I was over there his parents got me a cake and a humorous card. It was very sweet of them. We eat out (which was different for me, not for him which he does almost everyday) and I enjoyed it. Prior to going over to his house my best friend and I had some ice cream cake and went to see a movie in town.

In all it was a wonderful time: simple and to the point.

(And yes, I did buy some booze which I plan to responsibly experiment with, so the "tradition" of drinking when one turns 21 shall continue!)

Ours were in our garage, which was not locked. We live in an old people neighbourhood. I didn't pay for the bikes, my parents did (I'm only 15). So it's not like it's that big of a deal. It's just annoying and gives you that feeling of violation.

Out of curiosity, I choose this avatar because revleft is one of the few places where I can present as female. However, I would like to ask this community if this choice of avatar is orientalist. While the choice in of itself and outside of context is by no means orientalist, I am wondering if the revleft community thinks that overall my behavior is reflected of a "positive racism" of sorts. I ask this only because I have been accused of orientalism before and I do take critique to heart. Well, actually I was never accused of orientalism but rather of having "Yellow Fevor" because one of ex-partners was of east Asian descent, but despite the racism of this remark I do still understand that there is a rational Kernel to it.

So yes, Am I wrong here? I'm not afraid of being wrong. If I may quote Mao:

"If we have shortcomings, we are not afraid to have them pointed out and criticized, because we serve the people. Anyone, no matter who, may point out our shortcomings. If he is right, we will correct them. If what he proposes will benefit the people, we will act upon it."

Khrushchev opened the GUM to the public, whereas before it was just for the nomenklatura. I think that LSD can act as a kind of focus of one's overall worldview, magnifying it's intensity to brain-searing levels. Which is why hippies see "everything is connected maaaan" whereas I felt the full force of the universe in it's sublime wonder and mind-melting banality, all at once.

The universe is an achingly beautiful and marvellous place, and yet there is no reason, instinct or purpose behind it. The dichotomy is so stark and yet it exists as a single unified whole.

The apathy is a mask. When people say they're apathetic towards stuff, a lot of the time what they're actually feeling is resentment. I think that would be fine if they just came out and said it.

Why they hide behind apathy is a mystery to me. Are they trying to avoid coming off as an asshole? I think a lot of people are overly concerned with that.

I've felt pretty good about myself lately. Since returning from Detroit a few weeks ago, I've become re-orientated back to focusing on my political work and staying productive in that sense. I have also just started doing little things that have made my life easier to manage and more enjoyable. I started keeping not only 1 but 2 calendars both for my political stuff and for personal/music-related things.

All the while I've managed to stay extremely stoned the whole time and relaxed. It's been nice and I'm trying hard to not stop doing those things. Hopefully I'll start developing more healthy and productive habits.
