That would be followed by a self-sufficient Lunar colony...it would grow/raise its own food, manufacture its own oxygen, refine its own metals, etc.

Then you could build your interplanetary spaceships on the moon or in Earth orbit, with enormous fuel savings. They could even be nuclear-powered without any danger to Earth.

No doubt sending a few guys to Mars (at enormous expense) to "plant the flag" will be very inspiring to the "true-believers" in U.S. imperialism...if it still exists.

The scientific benefits will be marginal and the prospects of genuinely settling "the new frontier" will be just as distant as before the ship left.

Increasingly, capitalism is "all image" and "no content".
