Usually I'm pretty skeptical when someone claims that "there's no good music nowadays" (or there's no good music anymore in such-and-such genre, etc). There's a lot of good music out there and it usually only takes minimal effort to find it, with the internet and such. But one genre that the argument may hold some water for is hip hop...I'm a fan of 90's (non-2Pac) west coast hip hop, like Dr Dre, Eazy E, etc, and it doesn't really seem like that particular sound is around much anymore.

I was listening to a random playlist recently, and "Deep Cover" by Dr Dre & Snoop Dogg, and "Regulate" by Warren G & Nate Dogg came on. And I thought, damn, this shit is awesome. Those were popular songs back in the day & how come popular hip-hop today isn't like this. That was pretty much the inspiration for this thread. So, is there any modern hip-hop that has that kind of sound?

DPG have continued with the Gfunk thing (they release at least an album per year nowadays), though honestly I prefer their older stuff. Here's some recent ones

Thankfully the 90's have enough G-Funk for a lifetime. Just look on Youtube, there's hundreds of lesser known rappers

^yeah that's true, there were a bunch of artists from that whole scene that aren't as well known.

DJ Quik still has a bit in his latest stuff:

But yeah, it's unfortunate there's not more of it. I'm a big fan of G-funk myself, but I guess like everything most artists make what's popular, not necessarily what's good. I happen to think the greatest musical era were the 90's, and it's been downhill from then, but there's still occasional modern stuff I like.

Do you want me to pm you some underground gfunk rappers from LA? Most of the music is specifically about lowrider culture.
