View Full Version : The downfall of italian politics

As most of you probably know, the current political situation in Italy is more than troubled. The newest bourgeois democratic government of "grand coalition" is a total disappointment, the social democratic party is torn to pieces, former minister of justice Angelino Alfano (of Berlusconi's PDL party) protests against the magistracy (!) together with the rest of Berlusconi's political whores and Berlusconi continues to make massive rallies in support of himself, always relying on the usual "communist conspiracy" bullshit in order to convince the idiots that he's innocent.
In fewer words, italies bourgeois democratic system almost seems to be on the edge of collapsing. Beppe Grillo's movement is still creating some havoc but stays rather uninfluential as a political force (mostly due to its naive, idealistic ideology). It's still a sign for the fact that many people here want radical change. I really hope that we italian communists can mobilize the masses once again in view of these circumstances. The scumbag politicians are already contested more than ever by angry mobs as you can see in these videos:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gaS-rUcYyJo
There are pro-Berlusconi idiots but many united left wing contesters, too. At 3.05 they chant "Berlusconi, pezzo di merda!" (piece of shit).

Here you have another prominent PDL scumbag. Brunetta "the evil dwarf" (no offense to short people) surrounded by his police guard dogs, mocking the enraged masses.
Edit: Sorry for the failed links, I don't know why the youtube thing doesn't work for me.

What are the chances of Berlusconi regaining his footing and control?

Ah, thanks for the info, will keep that in mind next time I post something from youtube. Berlusconi is under quite some pressure from the judiciary (the evil communists in his eyes) and many are losing trust in him as a political figure. The majority of italians is just really tired of the endless conflict within the bourgeois system, provoked by Berlusconi's dubious nocturnal activities or rather him trying to defend himself by abusing political power. I fear that he still has his back covered for now but at least he's not in such a powerful position any longer. Berlusconi "culture" is probably a greater evil than the man himself right now.

What I am curious about is how Berlusconi has managed to preserve enough faith from the voting public to keep getting decent results, despite showing himself being incompetent and openly corrupt. Is it a sort of frank and rightly disillusionment with the electoral system that make people purposefully vote for the most outrageous figure, just because he will drive things down the shitter even faster than the other dregs? Or is it just the usual back and forth where the opposition are so equal in their failure that it results in an endless back-and-forth electing?
It seems to me there's little faith (and rightly so) in the bourgeois democratic system in Italy, but there's likewise a very large general social resignation, it seems, and little attempts at alternative movements beyond very brief and small-scale things...

People, I think, tended to vote against Monti and the left, not for Berlusconi. Berlusconi 'exploited' the disillusionment with Monti (for raising taxes and spending), and promised tax reductions. As a result the right-wing voters saw Berlusconi as the "only alternative." Of course, there are also zealous supporters of Berlusconi whom like a strongman, but those are, I imagine, the minority. This is just my impression, Nevsky may be able to confirm or refute this.

You're right, Berlusconis still has his brainwashed hardline followers but their number dropped radically in recent times. The majority of his votes came from desperate people who didn't see an alternative. Monti was perceived as something like the incarnation of german interests in Italy, so that many center right people ended up voting for Berlusconi's party instead. I guess many voters really wanted to believe Berlusconi's proaganda as it always sounds nice and the opposition is complete shit anyway. The "radical change" movement of Grillo also paints all the other established parties as the same "caste", so those who follow that line also don't differentiate that much between Berlusconi and what once were the social democrats.

How effective is this kind of thing in Italy? In the sense that there's an accusation of pervasive "Communist" dominance in society and government?

The effect is certainly not as strong as it used to be. 10 years ago all Berlusconi had to do was bashing supposed "communists" and making sure that Milan plays well to dominate the country. There are two main reasons why this kind of shit works so good for him, two bad experiances which many italians associate with communism. The "Brigate Rosse", Italy's equivalent of the german RAF, who were responsible for terrorist activities in the 70s and the socialist president Craxi who wasn't that bad of a statesman but is mainly remembered as a thief. Berlusconi's style of running the country proved to be such a failure that his believers decrease more and more.
People are still afraid of the radical left, though. In fact, Antonio Ingroia's "radical" coalition "Rivoluzione Civile" (what a an orthodox marxist-leninist would already dismiss as ultra-reformist, liberal revisionist) basically died in the last election.

Was there a particular reason for RC's implosion? I mean looking at it there seemed to be a lot of things running against them, with Vendola taking the SEL to run with the PD and the effect of the Five Star Movement on the "anti-establishment" vote.
