This dude seems to divide opinion a lot. An argument about whether or not what he does could be considered art recently broke out in a thread of mine. Personally, I'm a big fan.

He's a prick and the content of his lyrics reflect that, but there's beyond a doubt that his beats and rapping capabilities are far from terrible

I definitely see that, I was a young pre-teen at the peak of his career so I listened to him quite a lot. He's just good at rapping about being an ass, and then whining about it with the backdrop of a cleverly looped old r&b song

To be honest I'm not a fan, but he's far from most of the shit that passes as ''rap'' these days. And yes he is an asshole. I found it funny when he jumped on stage at the grammy's and everyone reacted like he was the first person to do so. When I brought up ODB I was met with dumbfounded looks and a clueless, ''Who?''.

Dude's a genius. Been a fan since his production on The Blueprint. BWTF do I know? Just some stupid person who listens to music and hears a great song and figures out who made it... Talking to my friends, this shit cracks them up, cuz we're all ooooooooooooooooold people. Just the fucking production on The Blueprint was a game changer. I thought maybe the first record would have Jesus Walks and a couple of OK songs and dude would be over. (BTW Rhymecraft who co-wrote Jesus Walks has a really good album, Blue Collar, came out around 2005) But he keeps going.
I don't love everything, but who cares? Watch The Throne was amazing. One or two mistakes. But that's pretty massive, to point to a record and say or here's the two things wrong with it, instead of , here's the one or two things ok with it.
I'd probably say the 2nd and 3rd albums were the best, but now I've got Barry Bonds in my head...
Edited to add: And his favourite album is Bizarre Ride 2 the Pharcyde. Anyone with that judgment is more than OK.

I tend to try not to care too much about the musicians behind the music I like.
Otherwise I'll always find out they are wankers.
That's mostly what has happened so far anyway.
I like Kanye. I've been know to dance to his music.
But seriously, if you "followed" any musical act on twitter (or facebook?), you ended up wanting to shove their head up their arse, after you've shoved razor blades up there.
Fuck twitter. Fuck facebook. Love Kanye.

Thats weird, people I know who don't like his music find him interesting the sense that every album he made changed the landscape of hip hop.
Like I'm not a Tyler the Creator fan but I still listen to his new albums out of curiosity to see what direction hes heading.
My favorite album of his is MBDTF. I didn't like 808s but understand its importance.
I'm not sure if I'll like his new album. Seems to have that techno Bambaata sound that I think is worn out and cliche. But if anyone can create aesthetic out of thin air it's Yeezy.

College Droput & Late Registration--->Started use of orchestral production and "Chipmunk Soul".
Graduation--->Use of Techno samples and modern snares.
808's---> Autotune crooning and speaking about one's vulnerabilities influences artists like Frank Ocean and Drake.
MTBDTF---> Production of a lavish aesthetic with a dark backdrop. Almost like a decaying personality due to fame.

I really cannot stand his music. He sucks magnificently. However, just because I think that he is infinitely terrible does not mean that what he does is not art. He is an artist, but I happen to think he is a bad one. And that is what makes art great: One person will proclaim something a masterpiece, while another will decry it as garbage.

My reaction to Black Skinhead was "this is okay but it's like a less good Saul Williams". I like that track much better than New Slaves, though, which again I think is a step in a good direction, but I think the lyrics leave a lot to be desired.
Trying to keep an open mind, tho. Have a feeling I'll have at least a few good words for Yeezus when it comes out if it's all gonna be like this.

I think Kanye is absolutely fantastic.
I like all of his albums except 808s. 808s was pretty terrible, but I still respect that he tried to do something different. so many mainstream artists (especially rappers) just find the thing that "works" and they stick with it until the end of their career. I really appreciate that kanye took a risk and he continues to evolve musically.

the lyrics to his new song titled "new slave"
My Momma was raised in an era when,
Clean water was only served to the fairer skin.
Doin clothes you would have thought I had help
I wouldn’t be satisfied unless I picked the cotton myself.
You see its broke n-gga racing
That’s that don’t touch anything in the store
Like this rich n-gga racing
That’s that come here please buy more
What you want a Bentley, fur coat and diamond chain?
All you blacks want all the same things
Used to only be n-ggas now everybody play me
Spending everything on that Alexander Wang
New Slaves
[Hook x2]
You see it’s leaders and it’s followers
But I’d rather be a dick than a swallower
[Verse 2]
I throw these Maybach keys
I wear my heart on my sleeve
I know that we the new slaves
I see the blood on the leaves
I see the blood on the leaves
I see the blood on the leaves
I know that we the new slaves
I see the blood on the leaves
They throwing hate at me
Want me to stay at ease
F-ck you and your corporation
Y’all n-ggas can’t control me
I know that we the new slaves
I know that we the new slaves
I’m about to wild the f-ck out
I’m going Bobby Boucher
I know that p-ssy ain’t free
You n-ggas p-ssy, ain’t me
Y’all throwing contracts at me
You know that n-ggas can’t read
Throw on some Maybach keys
F-ck it, c’est la vie
I know that we the new slaves
Y’all n-ggas can’t f-ck with me
Y’all n-ggas can’t f-ck with Ye
Y’all n-ggas can’t f-ck with Ye
I’ll move my family out the country
So you can’t see where I stay
So go and grab the reporters
So I can smash their recorders
Say that Confucius was some bullsh-t like the New World Order
Meanwhile the DEA
Teamed up with the CCA
They tryna lock n-ggas up
They tryna make new slaves
See that’s that private owned prison
Get your piece today
Prolly all in the Hamptons
Braggin’ ’bout their maid
F-ck you and your Hampton house
I’ll f-ck your Hampton spouse
Came on her Hampton blouse
And in her Hampton mouth
Y’all ’bout to turn sh-t up
I’m ’bout to tear sh-t down
I’m ’bout to air sh-t out
Now what the f-ck they gon’ say now?

I like rap, but I detest its greed elements and immorality. Selling drugs, money, that is all backwardiness of a capitalistic criminal society. Political themes, creativity, meaning, is what a lot of mainstream rap lacks.
Though, it also reflects the lower classes resorting to crime due to the inequality and exploitation of the bourgeoisie. I deeply care for the struggle of the proletariat suffering from inner-city conditions and poverty. These people tend to be more liberal, for the wrong reasons. They often want handouts by just popping out a child or two. And in what I believe, welfare is a tool by the bourgeoisie to keep the lower classes at bay. Until we can achieve full employment, this inequality and lower class greed will continue to exist.
Though the socialization of the economy will render the arts to the state, so the people in the society who will be responsible for the arts will flourish and not often starve in small apartments like in today's capitalistic society.
Everyone has to make a living, so selling art is not so bad in that respect. But in a socialist society, this material incentive should be abolished.

Just got this on FB from Real HipHopHead:
Dope post from no-buzz.net -- stic.man of Dead Prez speaks on Kanye West's comments about Dead Prez, and gives a very dope perspective in 'Ye, hate him or love him:
"I enjoyed the time we spent being around Kanye. I thought he was a brilliant visionary in terms of producing and creative ideas. I think he relates to much of our messages cause of the truth that resonates but I also think he was privy to see things from the Rockefeller side in a way that showed him how to make money and stimulate mass interest in his work. I think he is so talented and that is the true source of his appeal. But I also feel in my opinion, that he like many artists felt they had to make certain choices to be successful within the rules of the Game.
I think Ye studies the dynamics of life an uses it to his advantage for marketing. He looks at contradiction as the way things really are. He doesn't want to fit in any one sided box. I think for him he has found his lane which blends a lot of points of view that are often polarized but with Ye's art it becomes one. We all learn from one another. Brothers is out here trying to make an impact take care of their families and be relevant. Everybody don't agree on everything but at the end of the day I can understand how these artists are making their decisions and I think Ye offers a great deal of value to hip hop... Even if he don't sit right in some folks expectations.
I relate to his contradictions. I get it. He's being what he feels is what he needs to be to be Kanye. I respect his honesty and skills and am honored for the acknowledgement. I don't encourage no one to be like dead prez. I say find your own expression and make it count. We don't have all the answers. We got plenty room to learn an grow just like Ye and everyone else does. I think he is sincere in his embracing of some of dead prez perspective and juxtaposing it with the other stuff he is popular for. I think that is genuine for him. Life isn't one sided. If you can dig it great if not that's cool too.
I'm just happy a young brother from Chicago like Ye is alive and breathing and being creative and provocative and inspiring. We gotta stop looking for artists to be our saviors and get to work on what we believe is necessary ourselves. Call us out if you feel we need it. That's fine. But definitely realize we all just have to play our part the best we know how. I'm looking forward to hearing the record and going running listening to it. And when I see Ye I'ma give him a big pound and hug for the shout out."

Just say nay!!
Poet Thomas Tusser famously said, "A fool and his money are soon parted." But it took a $120 plain white T-shirt designed by Kanye West (with French design house A.P.C.) to prove just how many fools exist. Priced at roughly a gazillion times the cost of a regular white T-shirt, this Egyptian cotton "Hip Hop T-Shirt" bears no visible difference from a dollar-store tee. Other than the words "A.P.C. Kanye" silkscreened on the inner neckline, of course — letting only the wearer know how willing he is to throw money down the toilet. But despite the exorbitant price and simplistic design, the Kanye T-shirt sold out upon its debut, along with $265 jeans and $280 hoodies.

How can you people support a man who literally is a misogynist, basks in his wealth so he can throw it in peoples' faces, and is married to that horrendous Kardashian, a person famous for........ Oh right, contributing nothing to society. Kanye loves making sure everyone knows he is rich and he loves to make sure everyone knows he is having sex with Kim Kardashian, hence where I get the misogynist bit.

Jeez, hostile much. The title was "Kanye yay or nay", not "Kanye's music yay or nay". And I am not judging Kanye because of his lyrics, LOL. I am judging him for his actions as a person. Tyler the Creator has gay people in his crew! He has women in his crew. Tyler the Creator's point in his lyrics is to literally offend people. Because he finds it funny, as I do, how people are so sensitive about lyrical content. He is making fun of social conservatives in his songs.

This is the equivalent of saying the EDL are't fascists because they have some members from the Sikh and LGBT communities. "I'm not racist, one of my best friends is black..."
Because he finds it funny, as I do, how people are so sensitive about lyrical content. He is making fun of social conservatives in his songs.

You assumed I was straight? I'm not, by the way. If someone ever called me a faggot in real life, or called any of my friends a faggot, I would punch them. You need to quit having such a terrible attitude on this forum. How the hell can you compare the EDL, a fascist group, to Tyler the Creator anyway? You're comparing apples and oranges simply to antagonize me for reasons I have yet to discover. If you would like to criticize me further, just pm me. But right now, you're sort of making a fool out of yourself by trying to get me to argue about something to trivial.
If you are offended by lyrics, simply don't listen to it. Artists have a right to put what they want in lyrics. Unless of course, it's some kind of artist that identifies as a racist or homophobe or misogynist. Tyler the Creator loves when people like you get rowled up because it shows just how over-sensitive society is about what people put in their works of art.
And again, let me point out that I love how you just assumed I was straight without knowing a single detail about my personal life. So grab another martini glass, Brian, and try not to make such heteronormative assumptions. Thanks.

Yeah, I know the EDL are a fascist group. The clue is I said so in my post. The point, which actually, is a really simple one, is that your equation that somebody cannot be prejudiced because "there are gay people in his crew" is complete and utter bollocks.
Sorry if I'm being heteronormative but you don't usually see someone from an LGBT background calling out the rest of us at being 'oversensitive' when that sort of shit gets thrown around by (mainly) people from privileged backgrounds. But hey, it's their right to call us all that huh?

Keep digging.
I'm not sure what that means. But there's really no point in continuing this argument unless there is something specific you're trying to prove to me that you feel is important in which case I'll listen and respond accordingly. But I feel like we have accidentally divulged the purpose of this thread, so, I'm done if you are.
Again, I am not judging Kanye for his lyrics. Besides, who ever said I glorified Odd Future as people? I happen to like their music because I think it is funny how people get offended from lyrics. I don't get offended from lyrics to a song. Maybe some people do, I don't. I was judging Kanye for his animalistic behavior outside of his music.
EDIT: Guess he or she deleted their post.
Who gives a fuck how Kanye is a person? He even refuses to say the word faggot because of it being anti-gay. I've never seen him be disrespectful to his fans only paps and other celebrities. But again. No one should care. I think Tyler is a try-hard and loudmouth who whines about his daddy issues. But that doesn't affect my opinion of his music.
But right now, you're sort of making a fool out of yourself
.
No hes not.

See, I am actually not the spokesperson for Tyler, nor do I care what people think about him to be honest. I was just giving an opinion. I'm actually confused as to what your point is? I didn't even bring up Tyler, haha.

Actually that's kind of because he's a manchild who doesn't want to take responsibility for the things he says, like a lot of people are. Doesn't necessarily mean we can't listen to his music (all of us like things with questionable stuff in it), but there's no reason to try and defend the dumb things Odd Future puts in their music, especially when it's done only for shock.
I mean, like, Earl owned up to his shit, after all.

I actually am very very confused. I was making a comment about Kanye West. I wasn't aware that so many people had Kanye's balls in their mouths, that was a mistake on my part. I guess people really feel an undying loyalty to Kanye where they feel it is necessary to find my post saying how I liked Tyler the Creator's music and criticize me for it. So my mistake for criticizing the great and wonderful Kanye West. He is just a golden god compared to the Odd Future members, isn't he?
By the way, that statement was not just for you. Hahaha, it's just I don't see what everyone is trying to accomplish. Is it that you are trying to get me to defend Odd Future for the sake of an argument or...? Because quite frankly I won't defend them, I don't pledge some type of loyalty to them. But you all seem to have some weird loyalty for Kanye West.

You really are something else aren't you. Bit of a nerve talking about heteronormativity and then using a gender-specific insult.

Christ, you just don't get it do you? The point I was making, which everyone else seems to have aside from yourself, is that your post was hypocritical based on a previous post you made about music about another artist. It doesn't matter about anyone's opinion on Kanye at all, but your position on music gleamed from that post. If you can't see the connection, you're a bigger idiot than I thought.
You don't even know if I like Kanye or not.

We're pointing out that it's p. silly to hate on Kanye for being a misogynist when you are a tremendous Odd Future fan.
Also if you look at the poll and the replies most folks here take a dim view to Kanye anyway so it's really all about that flagrant contradiction there.

Ahh, see thank you! Thank you, now I understand the point of your argument. BUT may I point out that I never said the Odd Future people were good people? I just said I liked their music.
Also, why was that comment offensive? See, this is sort of my point. Society is WAY WAY too sensitive, I mean good lord.

Well, most of your post about Kanye would be about why he is a bad person too.
Also, why was that comment offensive? See, this is sort of my point. Society is WAY WAY too sensitive, I mean good lord.Nah people should just take responsibility for the dumb things they say (like weird homoerotic sexual comments that might have some weird vaguely homophobic undertones) instead of acting like it's everyone else's problem for being annoyed by it

But that's my point. I am not straight, and I take huge offense to someone calling me a faggot to offend me. That is offensive. But not every statement must be analyzed to find the evil intent. I am the most anti homophobic person you will ever meet. I would NEVER say anything to offend anyone based on their sexuality. My comment was simply an expression. It was not homophobic just because I made a silly sarcastic metaphorical statement about people having his balls in their mouth.
BUT I won't pretend like I don't see your point. It's just, if people get offended over everything, well.....that's just incredibly annoying for lack of a better term. They are just words. If people started taking less offense to things that weren't meant to be offensive, I think everyone would get along better.
Anyway, sorry for the monologue. But to address the point about Kanye, if you check out my original post, I completely separated what I thought of his personality and what I thought of his music. I dislike his music because it sounds literally the exact same as every other terrible rapper in the modern day. (In my opinion)

Music wise? Pretty awful, in my opinion. He has sold out just like every other rapper, absolutely nothing special about him musically.
I listen to Charles Manson and Burzum as well. I don't really care about the person behind the music.
How did sell out? Yeezus' sound is by no means a safe commercial bet.

And again, let me point out that I love how you just assumed I was straight without knowing a single detail about my personal life. So grab another martini glass, Brian, and try not to make such heteronormative assumptions. Thanks.
You do realize that
1). That there was no comparison but just an illustration of a point?
2). Lyrics and music often attribute how acceptable the use of certain behavior is or how much it influences communication.

I'm not a huge fan of rap to begin with, but usually I'll judge based on how skillful they are, so I'm not really biased. My problem with him is that he is way too full of himself. That's a pretty bad way to gauge a musicians talent because in my experience most musicians don't give a shit about the emancipation of the proletariat. You'd be stuck listening to old IWW songs, the internationale, and the red army choir all day. Those are good and all but I couldn't listen to them exclusively.

Same. A lot of famous people are kind of full of themselves but idk how to explain it. Something about Kanye and how he does it just bothers me. He is way over the top with it. That is exactly the kind of stuff I was thinking of when I posted that too, where he literally says he is God. If I can remember correctly he said he is God but he's a man of God... You'd probably be into some of the stuff coming out of NYC now. World's Fair just dropped an album for free (http://foolsgoldrecs.com/worldsfair/) yesterday, and their style borrows a lot from the kind of gritty surrealism that characterized 90s NYC hip hop. I'm not that into it, to be honest, feels a bit to revivaly for me, but you may like it (though I gotta admit, the song "B.O.T.P" on that album is pretty dope). Joey Bada$$ is another person doing similar types of stuff.
