View Full Version : why do people negrep eachother?

I understand positive rep, it's like a pat on the back, but what's the deal with negrepping? I have not been negrepped so I am not posting this to call anyone out or anything, but why would someone do that? it seems kinda cowardly (and being a coward on the internet is really saying something...), trying to diminish someones reputation on a website through means that nobody else can see and having it not be up for actual discussion. just seems pretty dumb.
edit: i'm fairly drunk but this is my sober opinion too.

Most people get neg repped mainly because they made trollish posts, posted inflammatory or offensive material, or were just being assholes. Although I'm sure it gets abused sometimes, and some will just do it to others out of spite. I think I only did it once, and if I remember correctly it was to some idiot who was trolling in OI in a thread I was in, so I just got fed up and did it, and I wasn't the only one.
-_- looool. cause some times people deserve it?Just like you possitive rep someone for saying something good, you neg rep someone for saying something stupid. It is that simple!Thats the whole point of rep, if you can only get possitive ones there is no point to it!That way you can see someone with really low rep and you know you cant really trust his/her post. About its a coward thing etc lol, seriously? thats ridiculous!!

Also people say stupid shit, and rep is serious business, so they let you know that they don't like your shit.

Because the post is exceedingly stupid or otherwise deserving of excoriation, and I don't want to clutter the thread, because most of the time someone else has already said what I would want to say.

Well, since you think of positive rep as a pat on the back for saying something worthwhile, think of negrep as a slap on the back of the head for saying something completely stupid.

Although I have neg-repped people for saying incredibly offensive or bigoted shit before, I prefer not to use it. An argument is at the very least an evolution of conflicting ideas- a red dot with an angry one liner is fluff and discourages discussion.

I normally only do it to people who complain about how low their rep is, or people who have truly horrible politics, and who see revleft as being some vitally important organ for them to express their groundbreaking ideas.
But manually adjusting somebody's rep all the way to the negative max as an admin was way better.

I've only done it two or three times to posts that were really out there. What's funny is when they retaliate by doing it to you a bunch, which a poster did to me once.
the only frustrating thing is that it's not really possible to continue the debate when someone does it to you. They vent some frustration about something you said, but you can't ever address or respond to what made it frustrating for them. Perhaps there's some middle ground to be found? To me it seems a little petty to abuse it but whatever, it's a fucking internet forum.

I've only done it a couple of times after being on the board for 6 or 7 years. There've been a couple of people on the board I probably should've used it with rather than getting in to back and forths with. I totally lost on it on someone, now long gone, on the board in a way that I thought was worthy of a ban/suspension. It was nasty ugly and actually suggested they report it. They didn't want to and it was in an open forum, so who knows? They were not well loved by more than a select few...

Anyway, When I get neg repped I tell people who neg rep me, you dont want to do that, if I neg rep you back your profile will crash deleting a whopping 50 rep points. Saying all that, I have only neg repped less than 15 times over 10 years. I'd rather be more transparent and just post what I think in a response.

I use it often when giving positive rep and want to say why I like the post. If I had to resort to sending a PM to do it, I probably wouldnt take the time. So it does serve a purpose.

So the point its not the reputation, but the "quick message" that you can send.Which again has nothing to do with the rep number. The reputation was set for people to see who are trustworthy and who not, now that it can only be possitive, the reputation as a number makes no sense at all.Keep the thanks function, keep the reputation as a notion, but the number and the blocks without the ability of negative rep are pointless and are there just to please the member egos. Also the same argument you make for positive rep can be made for the negative as well, why did we got rid of it then? Can we discuss it or vote in the BA at least?Cause for me this is the less sensible way of acting on this, either we keep it as is, or we completely get away with it.This half measure doesnt make sense.

Since users can only give negrep once per day if they haven't thanked anyone already, I don't think it will make much difference. I think it's good to have thanks though, because often I just use the "thanks" function to say that I agree but don't have anything constructive to add myself. Also I guess it's still the case that users who contribute well will have a higher reputation.

I find the 'thanks' function very helpful on a couple of levels -- to signal agreement and appreciation, without saying "I agree and appreciate that", to indicate I'm paying attention to a discussion without saying anything (like that happens (hahhahaha)) and also to get some feedback from people.

What exactly was the problem which so pressing it had to be dealt with by removing negative rep? If there are users who don't like the reputation system, then fine, they can disable that function via their control panel, but there was no great clamouring from the userbase for it to be removed.
It wasn't "a tool to troll people or speak in anger", that's patently ridiculous. Only a tiny minority of the userbase used the negative rep function in that manner, and if such useage is considered a problem, why not deal with the perpetrators (trolling is against the rules, is it not?) instead of ruining things for everybody else in what amounts to nothing less than collective punishment for individual transgressions.

Yeah. A lot of the discussions on here have been had a thousand times, when I see them again, I like to be able to thank a post, so anybody who is not familiar with the argument can see "oh this is a post from an ultra-left and the other ultra-lefts have thanked it, so this must be the ultra-left position". I don't really have any interest in debating the nature of soviet society or whatever, the thanks button is perfect for such situations.

I don't really agree with getting rid of it, but I don't care much either.
However, that said, I am gonna miss being able to piss off the big ol' bag o'dicks posters who were pretty much the only people I neg rep'd. Call it childish, or trolling, or whatnot, but on those rare occasions when you run into some sniveling asshat throwing a bigot/idiot tantrum in a thread it feels pretty good to just go ahead and cut their tiny rep in half, knowing it will piss them off more than getting shouted down in the thread (I tend to shout them down in the thread though too.) The best part is always when they come back and neg rep you back for like one point and leave some sort of angry butthurt message.
