I was flipping through the history book today in class and there was a section on pancho villa, it was very brief, saying he was a socialist revolutionary and a bandit, does any one know more of this? any links or anything?

The war ended in 1920, and many attempts were made on Villa's life by relatives of persons he had killed. On July 20, 1923, while driving his car through the town on Parral, Chihuahua, he was assasinated. The men responsible were never identified.

I remember one story where he stole $50,000 worth of U$ silver, couldant get rid of it, sold it back to the U$, then used the money to make an army with witch he unsucsessfully invaided America with.

Pancho Villa was a great revolutionary, although he commited some unworthy acts; Emiliano Zapata was a great revolutionary. Even conservatives can't bad mouth Zapata. The Mexican Revolution was very interesting and I highly recommend it to those who have no knowledge of this historical event.

I'm guessing Americans either set him up to be killed, or killed him themselves...

Zapata was set up to meet with his own army...and was assassinated. Bastards...

Actually he was killed by the same people that he fought for.

He was not killed by American, he was killed by another Mexican.

Pancho!

A social bandit, more along the lines of a Robin Hood than a politically motivated character, but a revolutionary none the less and a heavily romantisized figure.. He was a brilliant general and his actions in the north were pivitol during the revolution..

He was assasinated at the behest of Obregon and Carranza, two of his former allies in the revolution. They probably felt he was too great a threat to the establishment to remain allive. After all, when Huerta was successfully ousted and the other two took power, Villa turned and fought them and was forced into submission. They gave him a titular position as general, but obviously were not comfortable with him in the slightest.

I would be careful about romanticizing him as some kind of great or noble character though. During the revolution, he often had people executed on a whim. He didn't have the stomache for it himself, so he usually delegated out the responsibility to his friend Rodolfo Fierro, otherwise known as El Carnicero (or The Butcher). As far as I'm concerned, the only honorable figure of note in the whole revolution was Emiliano Zapata.

Agreed, it seems Zapata saw the bigger picture early on and was always in it for the main fruit - justice and equality. Villa was more a Buccaneer type opportunist..

Pancho Villa sounds like a good guy to me, as somebody said a Robin Hood of his time. Emiliano Zapato is an excellent revolutionary figure, just wish i knew more about him.

Emiliano Zapata . You won't get very far with a google search of Emiliano "Zapato". You'll probably get a page full of shoe advertisments by a guy named Emiliano

i think that villa was a leader amongst the ranchers in particuler, (although I wish I could confirm that) but he did cause the U.S. gov quite a bit of trouble (which is always a good thing). So they sent some mil officer to pusue him when he was raiding the New Mexican/Texas border.

And he has a cool hat
