So now that me and my gf are broken up I'm going to have a lot of time on my hands, and I can get back to one of my favorite activities.

For those of you who don't know what LARP is it stands for "Live Action Role Play" basically I go to the park for a couple days a week and you dress up in medieval clothing (but really whatever you wan't) and you hit each other with foam weapons. It's so nerdy, yet so fun. I noticed that we don't have a LARP thread here and I thought this could maybe the official LARP thread.

Here are some visual presentations (I hope you guys don't see me as even nerdier now lol):

I wish more people would do it. I know it looks dorky but it's so fun.

A few years ago I was walking through a park with my girlfriend at the time, and I hear all this commotion. We look over and see 4 grown men, dressed as what I can only describe as hobbits/Lord of the Rings type stuff. Beating the shit out of each other with swords made of duct tape(?) or whatever. We stared in disbelief.

No, just class-war reenactments:

No, I haven't larped or done any reenacting - I tried a dice roll playing game once, but I didn't "inhale" as they say. Didn't really see what was so entertaining about it and I was never really into the fanstasy genre so I couldn't get past the dwarfs and wizzards.

I have always wanted to do one of those murder mystery party - better yet, they should have holodecks like on Star Trek so that we can live out a Sherlock Holms or Agatha Christie story, be a Scarface-like crime boss, or an episode of Star Trek where they act out a detective story on the holodeck - meta.

I don't do the fantasy LARP thing but I am a member of several leftist organizations.

Never done it but it looks like great fun, the idea of expressing yourself so openly like that is really appealing, if someone says they don't have a desire to bash someone with a foam sword or a pillow (:p) every now and again they're lying.

A guy at my local college tried to start an Amtgard group, but only me and two of my friends were interested not enough to really do anything beyond practicing sword fighting. He is going to try again next fall.

I used to do this kind of thing all the time though it wasn't very professional and was just like me and ten friends. And it was ghetto as fuck swords/axes with no costumes(Because who could afford them when they're in 5th grade). We'd get pcv pipes, put one of those noodles(The toys you play with in pools) over it, and just roll duct tape around and around and around until they were huge. We'd always be like random characters from different video games and cartoons, I was always Cloud or Sepiroth :D. Yeah my sword was pretty long.

My cousin does it but I don't really talk to him anymore because he's a cop in LA now :(

Luna have FUN above all. Don't let the try-hards and the elititists get to you; they're opinion doesn't matter. If you die alot, so what? Have fun above all. Remember that lol.

Looks like a fun activity, if possibly rather expensive (although I doubt it's more expensive than collecting Warhammer 40,000 miniatures).

In pen+paper RPGs I've found it difficult to "get into character", but actually dressing for the role and playing it out would, intuitively, make actual role-play that much easier. Is this the case?

Very much so comrade. I'm really glad you wan't to get in. For example my character is a human druid (healer basically) who was orphaned after a rival knightdom slaughtered his tribe and the archmage Deldrik took him under his wing. Now he is mostly a mercenary for hire but he has an outgoing personality and not liking to use stealth and being very bubbly. You just feel as if you're a part of the world and it's very immersive. Please PM me if you have any questions. It's not usually expensive to start btw.

I don't know if I could get into it. I absolutely love to roleplay in MMORPGs but I don't know if people could pull it off well enough to take it seriously. Plus I'm really shy and I get nervous when I act in front of people.

I think I could enjoy the combat aspect though.

There was some lulzy movie about this - how one of these role playing games got out of hand, and it turned into a lord of the flies kind of situation. I forget what it was called, but I enjoyed it and I imagine the OP will as well.

I sometimes see LARPers in the parks near uni and I always think it looks kind of silly, but it's probably a lot of fun. I like pretending to cast spells and fight monsters with my 3 year old son.

why can't people just dress up like elves and slap each other with fake swords without being weird about it jeez

What do ya mean lol? I will admit some people take the role-play aspect of it very seriously (sometimes myself included). But the role-playing is half the fun and it just immerses you in the game. Imagine playing skyrim and then getting up and doing it in real life haha.

i heard of some anarchists who joined a medieval reenactment or whatever type group so that they could practice shield walls, group movement and close combat against armored opponents

Now that's cool.

Too bad my group is literally almost all about the role-play aspect. Sometimes even the combat is heavily influenced by the story (which isn't really a problem: it makes sense.)

That looks cool especially if you're into shooting and being in a military type environment (which I would love to do, don't get get me wrong) it just seems so expensive, where as larping is just wearing a bathrobe (really anything you would like) and making/buying a 10-20 dollar weapon.

Even if cost wasn't an issue, I imagine one has to be careful about waving around replica firearms in public places.

It's just that as a geek who prefers science fiction over fantasy, modern-style military LARPs appeal to me more.

Although if I really wanted to do a military science fiction LARP, the idea of doing something fairly free-form sounds like crazy fun, especially if people can bring all sorts of fake weapons such as Nerf guns, Airsoft (the cheap and low-powered ones would be ideal), and cap guns (anyone remember those?).

Chaotic fun is best fun!

Do cap guns hurt as bad as Airsoft guns? I feel like someone could lose an eye if they don't have the special eye goggles.

If you're using decent caps, a little bit of smoke also comes out, for additional verysillymitude.

I've always kinda wanted to LARP. Never had the time or money, however. I might be doing a cosplay later this year with a trans friend I've mentioned here before. She is gonna be Rosalind Lutece and I'm going to be Robert. Her friend and my best friend might join us as Booker and Elizabeth respectively (they both really look the part). It should be awesome if we can pull it off right!

Cosplayers are LARPers allies since many of us do both! Lmao
