Never heard of it, as far as I know "diaspora" is the only reasonably successful Facebook alternative with good privacy...

I don't think I'd ever put my personal information on a website named 'World Truth'.

You can use an alias anywhere. I don't use my real name ever, anywhere. Not on fakebook or so, which many seem to. That'd be silly to do. No one knows me by that shitty abomination of a name, anyway.
They can try to intimidate people into using real names, but they can't possibly enforce that without beginning ridiculous confirmation processes, checking out documents and birth-dates and what-have-you, and though I am sure that is exactly the sort of shit-future we stand at the threshold of, we are generally not there yet.

It really pissed me off when Youtube aka Google kept pestering me to use my real name. I kept telling them no, and they're like ARE YOU SURE, LOOK AT ALL THE BENEFITS. Yeah, nah, fuck that.

I let it use my google+ name. It's not my real name either.
We need the Kommie Group Base as an alternative
But yeah, Diaspora is way better than Facebook. I should start up my node again.

Do Diaspora profiles have information or "about" sections that users may fill in, that others can see only when signed up? I looked at some as a non-user and they seem to lack anything but a main sharing timeline, so I was wondering.

When setting up my Disapora account, it's asking me if I want to speed things up a bit by hooking up my Facebook account to Diaspora.
Umm no.

I'm sure you all know this, but you can be completely anonymous on Twitter.

But you can only type "A.C.A.B." 17 times in a post before hitting the character limit! And that's without spaces.
I'm still interested in knowing if this Diaspora lets people have more on their profiles than a single sharing timeline or "wall".
Anyone on Google+? I am, but mostly because its so tightly integrated with my Gmail account.

The problem with alternatives is that other people don't use them, and one of the things I use facebook for is planning social stuff. I suppose if you were using it purely for political organising then it might be wise and/or possible to switch though.

if youre that concerned about security why would you use social networking anyway?

It's not the focus group marketing type capitalists sneaking into every aspect of your online activity thing on facebook that bothers me so much as peoples behavior on that thing. The change in personalities. The amplification of 'bad faith' if you will.

I'm generally a fan of my friends, of people, of social interaction but the facebook culture is like being stuck in room with everyone projecting their vision of themselves against the way other people see them amidst a mixture of people who would likely never even be in the same room together. Friends, friends of friends, co workers, family members etc. It's like social schizophrenia. No exit. No hope. The only way out is to delete it.

As mentioned, you can use Facebook securely if you are smart about it. VPN+encryption or a proxy (though proxies can be 'reversed' with code embedded in the site allowing them to see your real IP. No doubt Facebook does this). I rarely use Facebook though. I still don't like/trust them regardless.
I think Diaspora is FOSS (free/open source software). Couldn't RevLeft just use pre-existing social software, such as Diaspora, and install it to the server? Just make adjustments for security, add a link to the forum and voila, our own social networking.
if youre that concerned about security why would you use social networking anyway?
Using online social networking does not instantly mean losing your security/anonymity though.

It is an amazing claim...!
I do not think there is any alternative of FB..
If it is really an alternative of FB then it is very new to me and is also very surprising for me..

Wow cool, there is another one called Evolve society here is the link of Evolve Society: http://evolvesociety.org. You know Facebook is full of US government hackers and ultra-right wing hackers, anti-communism anti-left hackers

Dear friends, we have to give thanks to Edward Snowden and Bradley Manning !!
You know the great majority people out there have taken for granted the whistle blower Edward Snowden, how he exposed the truth about the NSA spying scandal, and the way the US government spies on US citizens and even on the people of other countries. There are many articles out there about how Facebook is linked to the CIA and how it spies on the members of Facebook. And I've learned from whatreallyhappened.com that the US government has this very bad habit of hiring hackers to terrorize people, to introduce trojan viruses and other super-advanced viruses, with the goal of learning about what people are doing, what people are thinking about, and learning about the thoughts and personal ideas of americans.
That's why I've decided to quit Facebook, some blogs, and writting comments on wordpress. That's why in many movies you will see that smart criminals, smart professional thieves do not use credit cards, computers, cell phones, private cars, etc. Because they know that all electronic technologic, all advanced technology including, vehicles, credit cards, etc. destroy the personal freedom of people. Because as soon as people are tied and enslaved by cell phones and credit cards. they are not free anymore. They become trackable to the US government
That's why the only place where I will write my thoughts and opinions against the capitalist system and communism as the solution will be in this forum. Besides most leftists of Facebook are not serious, most Facebook leftists are really bourgeoise liberals and the radical marxist Facebook members are not very concentrated into marxist analysis of the global economy. Maybe because Facebook is really set up as an internet social club, and not really set up as a place for scientific rational cold discussions.
These types of forums like Revleft.com and other forums like this one with many different sections, sub-sections are a lot better than Facebook for scientific serious debates

I'll go so far as to say that there now exists a fully mature, free drop-in desktop replacement for the Windows hegemony and all of its ills: Point Linux.
