The Rise of Scottish Nationalism
Vic Vanni
Until the end of the 1950s the SNP was a joke, but from then on its growing support has enabled it to become the political force that it is today.
There are several reasons for this transformation and Vic will outline what these were. He will also look at the coming referendum on Scottish independence and explain why the result, whatever it may be, will leave the capitalist system intact.
2.15pm to 3.30pm
The Curse of Racism
John Cumming
Religious superstitions and nationalism play a large part in keeping workers divided. Racism is another prejudice often found in the vile mix of prejudices which inhibit a proper understanding by workers of their real position in society. This weird and nasty prejudice has appeared in many guises, e.g. anti-Semitism, Apartheid, the Ku Klux Klan, Nazism.
It’s effects range from verbal abuse and street attacks to genocide. How did the strange notion of racism arise? And how can we be rid of it?
3.45pm to 5pm
The Occupy Movement
Brian Gardner
The Occupy Movement which appeared from nowhere to dominate global headlines little over a year ago, now seems to have disappeared just as quickly. But has it?
In this session Brian will briefly review a century of radical protest before looking in more depth at the origins and future of the Occupy Movement and similar recent developments, and ask what can socialists learn from it?
Admission - free
Refreshments - during all sessions tea, coffee, biscuits and light refreshments will be available free of charge.
