Heroes who shed their blood and lost their lives! You are now lying in the soil of a friendly country. Therefore rest in peace. There is no difference between the Johnnies and Mehmets to us where they lie side by side here in this country of ours. You, the mothers, who sent their sons from far away countries wipe away your tears; your sons are now lying in our bosom and are in peace. After having lost their lives on this land they have become our sons as well. ~ Mustafa Kemal Atatürk

ANZAC Day is an horrible day because we have to remember that so many lives were lost for a war that should not have happen.

As for the video. It's Sabaton. A power metal band from Sweden. Their lyrical themes are about historical wars.

Here is the lyrics for "Cliffs of Gallipoli"

Hear them whisper voices from the other side
Hear them calling
for the both sides friends are resting side by side

They will never leave our hearts or fade away
Live forever
They were far too young to die in such a way

How many wasted lives? How many dreams did fade away?
Broken promises they won't be coming home
Oh mothers wipe your tears your sons will rest a million years
Found their peace at last as foe turn to friend and forgive
And they knew they'd die

Gallipoli
Left their letters in the sand
Such waste of life
Gallipoli
Dreams of freedom turn to dust

Hell is waiting
Where the ocean meets the sand
Cliffs of burden
where the soldiers rushed into a certain death
At the shoreline blood of heroes stains the land
Light a candle
one for each of them who fought and died in vain

There is no enemy there is no victory
Only boys who lost their lives in the sand
Young men where sacrificed the names are carved in stone and kept alive
And forever we will honour the memory of them
And they knew they'd die

Gallipoli
Left their letters in the sand
Such waste of life
Gallipoli
Dreams of freedom turn to dust

How many wasted lives? How many dreams did fade away?
Broken promises they won't be coming home
Oh mothers wipe your tears your sons will rest a million years
Found their peace at last as foe turn to friend and forgive
And they knew they'd die

Gallipoli
Left their letters in the sand
Such waste of life
Gallipoli
Dreams of freedom turn to dust

My Great Great Grandfather was part of the American expeditionary forces. At least we should remember and honor the fallen.

Do you honour the Turkish dead, B5C?

My great uncle went to fight Bolsheviks. Shall I honour that?

I honor both sides because they were both pawns who died wastefully.

My great uncle went to fight Bolsheviks. Shall I honour that?

Your choice. I know my great great grandfather didn't volunteered, but drafted into going to France.

What the hell is this all about? Is there some historical event or something I don't know about?

The 25th of April is the day when Turkey, Australia, New Zealand, and many other nations honor the fallen who died in the Gallipoli Campaign.

Fair go. But there's a line to be trodden I think. I think 'honour the dead' comes too close for comfort to 'honour the glorious dead' which is related to 'dulce et decorum est pro patria mori'. Much better I think to say 'the best epitaph would be the end of the end of the capitalist system that murdered millions of people'.

...

Well, my great uncle may have been drafted when he was sent to France in WWI, but he was a volunteer when he went to Russia - but I'm not really convinced it was 'informed choice' on his part, so I'm not going to hold it gainst him.

It's a day of nationalism and jingoism. 'Honouring' the dead and the nation.

How did you honor them? Posting this and wearing a pin or something? I'm sure the dead appreciate it.

So we can keep remember and hopefully we can prevent more senseless deaths in our imperialist wars.

but that's not what days like this and days like remembrance sunday in the UK are used for, they are used to support national identity and many cases actually garner support for further imperialist wars.

and that song sucks so bad.
this is a better song about gallipoli
