I was thinking of trying to grow some herbs in pots inside on the window sill, but then I thought... is it possible to grow veg in pots outside? If so, what kinds grow best? I don't have a garden suitable for growing anything, but I thought it might be nice to have a go in some pots, and it would be something to do with my son too. Also, I know nothing about plants. So any suggestions or whatever would be welcome.

potatoes

You can grow them in trashbags and also burlap sacks which makes it easier than growing them in pots.

If you do decide on potatoes and you grow them like this let me know how everything goes because I'm pretty interested in doing this myself.

potatoes

not suitable for on a balcony i guess but apperently you can get huge yields of only one potato plant if you grow them in car tires filled with soil and everytime the tip of the plant peeks up from out the soil you ad another tire and soil.
maybe you can make some contraption with a pvc pipe where you can lower the soil and top it off when the plant breaks surface.

I don't know what the area Quail lives in looks like but an even crazier idea would be maybe start a low maintenance guerrilla garden utilizing the tire idea. I think that would be a pretty cool radical diy thing to do with kids.

Tomatoes, peppers and onions all do pretty good in pots. I've heard kale can do nicely as well, but I haven't tried it yet.

a friend mentioned this 'freeware' thing to me. he grows potatoes in them: http://earthtainer.tomatofest.com/pdfs/EarthTainer-Construction-Guide.pdf

check your hardiness zone: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hardiness_zone and then do a google search for what plants do well there and when you can plant them, or how- direct seed or start seedlings indoors, etc

you can grow pretty much anything in a pot if you got a big enough one that drains right

Herbs are piss easy to grow. Put a herb in a pot and it will definitely grow. It depends on the climate but here in Ireland I grow Cress, Mustard, Thyme, Parsley and Corriander. Parsley is probably the best as I use it a lot in cooking and its a hardy plant that lasts all year round - it even came up again when I harvested it all!

As regards Vegetables, pots are not suitable for most legumes. However you can purchase a small bag which is relatively cheap and its full of compost, this is perfect for growing Tomatoes, beans, onions and potatoes.

You'll grow potatoes ok in pots but they will be rather small, but things like onions and cabbage are winners in pots.

Tomato feed is your best friend when growing absolutely anything. It is so versitile and its a very natural fertilizer.

I grew 9 sunflowers in pots also last year. The tallest one grew to 8 feet, the neighbours used to be obsessed with my back yard as most of them have never seen a sunflower in Ireland, let alone 9 giant ones looking over my back wall! :thumbup1:

I'm doing square foot gardening this year. With my limited space I will be able to harvest a good amount woth a bigger variety. You just need a 6 feet by 3 feet space.
