I have recently resigned my membership of the Socialist Party of Great Britain (SPGB) after more than a 30 year association.

The party's forum is using ‘moderation’ to suppress dissent.

I am not talking about reasonable moderation. Whole arguments about democracy and free speech within the SPGB are removed by the moderator.

My association with the SPGB goes back to the 70s when their argument was;

"The Socialist Party of Great Britain is wholeheartedly in favour of the fullest freedom of speech. This is because we hold that out of full and free discussion of today's social problems only one valid conclusion can emerge: that Socialism alone will provide the framework within which they can be solved.

Full free speech means exactly what it says: any and every view should be allowed expression so that it can be examined and shown to be wrong."

Socialist Standard January 1979

Their claim that they are merely using moderation does not stand up to scrutiny.

They no longer practice what they preach

Welcome :)

If you have political questions, you can ask them in the Learning forum. That's why it's there after all!

If you have questions about your account, don't hesitate to send me a PM or ask here.

Why resign membership instead of putting up a fight? Also, is this just their forum moderation going rogue? Or is Socialist Standard under similar "moderation"? How are SPGB meetings "moderated"?

I am not the only one to resign over this. You may already know this but the party is basically a democratic organisation run by party poll, conference decisions and the EC basically administers and does not lead.
However this has not been applied to its forums. The moderators have been appointed and they lead and the membership have stood by and allowed, indeed supported, the suspension of party members from the forums for speaking out.:confused:

Welcome! I'd suggest continuing discussing this at SPGB Forum Purge (http://www.revleft.com/vb/showthread.php?t=180388) for the sake of keeping introductions about introductions, but I'm not a mod here so it's not up to me.
