Anthropology has been defined as the study of what it means to be human; and although Karl Marx is more widely known as a political journalist, philosopher, economist and revolutionary socialist, the aim of my talk will be to suggest that Marx was also, in an important sense, an anthropologist. He was in fact one of the founding ancestors of anthropology. Focussing on Marx's understanding of the human subject, I will explore his ideas in relation to four fundamental concepts that derive from the Enlightenment - nature, society, history and science. I shall suggest that Marx's understanding of anthropology, as a critical dialectical, historical science, still has relevance in understanding contemporary issues.
