It's a shame to hear all these recent war news again about the DPRK. I really wanted to travel there in the near future. Not that I support the regime's juche ideology (not at all) but the country itself fascinates me.

Interesting article. Maybe we should put some non-recognized countries to the list, too. Like Abkhazia, South Ossetia, Transnistria or Nagorno-Karabakh. I've always wanted to visit those. Nauru and Turkmenistan too.
I have a traveling fetish for small and relatively unknown countries, so thank you for this. :)
Edit: Pitcairn Islands. I really wanna see those.

This article was sweet, because it made me aware of the Door to Hell. So awesome!

Door to Hell/ Derweze has made rounds on the internet as being an interesting phenomenon. I stumbled across it once after looking up similar incidents to that of Centralia, Pennsylvania. Unfortunately the government became aware of that and decided to tout it for tourist purposes, the wiki page on it says that the president forced some villagers away from it because it was bad for tourism.
Turkmenistan also has a zany dictatorship like that article said, the president, Saparmurat Niyazov, being there from its independence to his death in 2006 (continuing from being a Communist Party chief in the 80s to boot). You can look him up on wikipedia for more but among some of the things I remember was his habit of naming everything from months to cities after himself and his family, finding ways to relate himself back to national culture, and a proposal for an Ice Palace or something like that.

Didn't Niyazov make it so that televisions in Turkmenistan, when turned off, displayed a silhouette of him?

only works if you have your own boat
otherwise you'll have to stay there for 3 months waiting for the annual boat to the airport
and do you really want to spend 3 months living with creepy Pitcairners?

Oh, hell no. So it's close to impossible, except in a private arrangement?
