Fri, 03/29/2013 - 11:44am
http://pugetsoundanarchists.org/sites/default/files/styles/medium/public/may1st.jpgSpring has sprung! This is a call for everyone who wants to celebrate May 1st by honoring the history and struggle of May Day. We will converge together in solidarity with our comrades facing repression from last year's May 1st demonstrations and also to continue to stand against the oppression of our everyday lives in all forms, from the borders to the prisons and from bosses to the police. May Day is a day of tradition, a day to remember all our comrades that can't be here with us and to remind each other that our struggle is global!
Meet on Wednesday May 1st at the corner of Pine & Broadway (SCCC) at 6pm. There will be a rally and a march.

#May1TO, May Day: Solidarity City! Status for All! Decolonize Now!
Posted in May Day
Start: May/01/2013 - 5:30 pm

Join us in the streets for our 8th Annual May Day of Action!

5:30pm, Wednesday May 1st, 2013
March starts at Toronto City Hall

On facebook: www.facebook.com/events/306795326114626
Videos from previous year: http://bit.ly/MayDayTOVids

Poster series imagining a Solidarity City: http://on.fb.me/12HV9DO

For seven years, you have marched on May Day to celebrate and invigorate migrant justice struggles in Toronto. On May 1st, 2013, let's take to the streets once again to build a Solidarity City. Solidarity City is a unified struggle for: Respect for Indigenous Sovereignty; Status for All; an End to Imperialism and Environmental Destruction; an End to Austerity and Attacks on the Poor and Continued Resistance against Patriarchy, Racism, Ableism & Homo/Transphobia.

Pipelines, tankers, mines, and so-called development projects are being forced onto the lands of Indigenous nations. Harper, like every Prime Minister who came before him, refuses to respect the sovereignty of Indigenous peoples and continues to neglect his treaty obligations, as seen in Omnibus Bill C-45. In the face of this and more, land defenders across Turtle Island continue to resist in powerful and inspiring ways. As we look towards an exciting summer of action and resistance fueled by the Idle No More movement and Defenders of the Land, this May Day let us honor all ongoing decolonization struggles and commit to continuing our support for Indigenous sovereignty.

The past year has seen the implementation of C-31, dubbed the Refugee Exclusion Act, further criminalizing migrants and expanding the detention and deportation machine. Jason Kenney announced the creation of a designated countries of origin, a racist, two tiered system under which refugees get fewer rights based on their place of birth. This past November, many of us honored our communities and confronted Minister Kenney when he showed up in Toronto. On May 1st, let us take to the streets to build community alliances and resistance once again.

Exploitative temporary worker programs continue to expand and many migrant workers continue to meet deportation, injuries and in some cases death. Workers are being forced to pay thousands of dollars to get jobs in Canada for which entire families go in to debt, yet no provisions exist for status on landing. Since Harper came into power, over 72,000 people have been locked up in immigration detention. In December we rallied in solidarity with security certificate detainees Mohammad Mahjoub, Mohamed Harkat and Mahmoud Jaballah and all those locked up in immigration detention. This May Day let us take to the streets to end detentions and deportations and to call for freedom to move, freedom to stay and freedom to return!

On February 21st, Toronto City Hall reaffirmed its promise to providing services to residents without full immigration status. We will continue to build a Solidarity City where communities work together to ensure justice and dignity for all residents. The history of Access Without Fear in Toronto is a long one and on May Day let us march to celebrate our victories and commit to continued struggle.

In the face of austerity, climate destruction, colonial and capitalist wars and interventions here and across the world that push people out of their homes, let us fight for status for all. Status for All is the struggle for self-determination, just livelihood, housing, food, education, healthcare, childcare, shelter, justice and dignity for all people, with or without immigration status.

Coordinated by a coalition of community groups including No One Is Illegal - Toronto, May 1st Movement and Ontario Coalition Against Poverty. Endorsers include Association of Part-Time Undergraduate Students (APUS), Camp Sis, Casa Salvador Allende, Educators for Peace and Justice. Health for All, Maggie's: Toronto Sex Workers Action Project, OPIRG York. Rhythms of Resistance - Toronto, Socialist Project, Toronto Haiti Action Committee, Toronto New Socialists, Women's Coordinating Committe for a Free Wallmapu [Toronto] and more. The Student-Labor Coalition at SUNY New Paltz is organizing a rally in celebration of International Workers’ Day, recognizing the important contributions of all workers at SUNY New Paltz. The event will take place at noon on May 1 on the SUNY New Paltz academic concourse in front of the Humanities Building. In the event of rain, it will be held in Lecture Center room 102. For more than a century, May Day has been a celebration of the international labor movement and is a national holiday in more than 80 countries. The New Paltz rally will focus on issues of concern to faculty, staff and students at the college. This event is being sponsored by a broad coalition of unions and student groups, including the New Paltz chapter of United University Professions (UUP), CSEA, New York Students Rising (NYSR), the New York Public Interest Research Group (NYPIRG), Students for Justice in Palestine, the Hudson Valley Activist Newsletter and Amnesty International, among others.

A principal focus of this event is the call for equitable pay and fair working conditions, including job security, for contingent faculty. The Student-Labor Coalition is demanding that all adjunct and full-time lecturers be paid a minimum starting salary of $5,000 per course. Adjuncts typically teach one or two courses per semester and currently make around $3,000 per course, earning them a salary just above the poverty level. Lecturers are paid about $4,000 per course, but are expected to teach five courses each semester, an excessive and unsustainable workload that is unique among SUNY colleges. Student and faculty leaders will address this issue that directly affects educational quality, fairness and equity.
In addition to the working conditions of contingent faculty, speakers will address other pressing issues of concern to students, including soaring student debt, deficient campus policies on maternity & family leave for faculty and students, as well as the marginalization of the Women’s, Gender and Sexualities program. While celebrating the contributions of campus workers, this event underscores the need to provide affordable, quality public higher education for students in New York State.

MAY DAY DECLARATION 2013: WE WILL NOT BECOME THE SLAVES OF THE 21ST CENTURY (http://www.wftucentral.org/?p=6270&language=en)

17 April 2013 http://www.wftucentral.org/wp-content/wftu5.thumbnail.jpg (http://www.wftucentral.org/wp-content/wftu5.jpg)The World Federation of Trade Unions appeals to all the trade union organizations in the world to organize on the occasion of May Day 2013 rallies and activities in all countries, in all continents, honoring the International Workers’ Day and the martyrs of the working class. The WFTU proposes, based on its resolution at its Presidential Council Meeting on March 7-8,2013 in Lima Peru, the slogan: “CHICAGO SHOWED US THE WAY” to be used next to the respective slogans of each union organization.
The international trade union movement bears great responsibility to protect and defend the International Workers Day from the efforts of capitalist governments, employers, various institutions and non governmental organizations to vanquish this day or completely alter its meaning.
The May Day is for the international working class a SYMBOL of the irreplaceable role that the workers hold in the society and the production, of the important and the victorious achievements of the class struggles historically, of the fact that all the rights are the fruit of bloody struggles. Nothing was handed over to the working people.
The May Day is a DAY OF MEMORY AND TRIBUTE to the martyrs of the working class who sacrificed themselves in the crucial and decisive strikes of the American workers in Chicago (1886) demanding 8 hours of work, 8 hours of recreation, 8 hours of rest, as well as the struggles for the working hours in many countries all over the world before and after the Chicago strikes, throughout the history of the class struggle until today. We pay tribute to the martyrs of the working class who were killed, tortured, imprisoned and were forcibly disappeared by the anti-popular and anti-labor governments of the capital in all continents.
The May Day is a LESSON FOR THE NEW GENERATIONS that includes the principles of the working class such as the proletarian internationalism, the class unity, the irreplaceable value of the decisive struggles with class-orientation.
Most of all, the May Day is a DAY OF STRUGGLE where the International Working Class meets in the streets of the fight for the contemporary labour and social rights. For the right to less working hours with dignified salaries which was realistic in the 1880’s and cannot be unrealistic in the technological progress of the 21st century!
Nowadays, while capitalism being in its deep crisis exposes in all the spectrum its barbaric, brutal and ruthless face confiscating any ounce of right from the working class and the popular strata; Nowadays that the competition of the monopolies creates more battlefields and new imperialist interventions; Nowadays that the state violence, repression of social and labour struggles and the violation of the trade union freedom escalate internationally let’s move:

- Chicago showed the way – NO to the contemporary capitalist slavery

- We fight for a world without exploitation of men by men

- On May Day, the WFTU expresses its internationalist solidarity with the people of Cuba, Palestine, Syria, Lebanon, Mali, Colombia, Venezuela etc.
