Does anyone know of any good works of fiction that are social commentary? Anything sort of recent, maybe 1990 or newer? I decided I should read more. I want to read something fictional that's a social commentary relevant today. I'd prefer an urban setting.

Know anything? Any ideas?

Off the top of my head, Snow Crash. It's set in an anarcho-capitalist's wet dream of the US; the Mafia is a legitimate business, companies own roads and highways, et cetera. I think it's one of the better cyberpunk books I've read.

For an older one see: The Dispossessed by Ursula K. Le Guin.

Using this excuse to promote China Miéville. Mostly good stuff and relevant to your interests.

I've heard that The Water Thief by Soutter is a pretty good response to some of Rand's works, but I haven't had the time to read it so don't have much of an opinion on it.

EDIT: Fallen Dragon by P.F. Hamilton paints a very bleak portrait of the far future (with megacorporation rule, interplanetary imperialism, etc.) that could easily be seen as relevant today (though the ending is the typical reformist one).
