I went to Nicaragua this summer with a community development organization, and I found a great respect for everyone there. I have also come to realize that the biggest problem there is that the U.S. keeps strong-arming the country into putting the conservative (and ironically-named) Liberal Constitutional Party (PLC) into power, even though it is VERY corrupt and the leftist Sanista National Liberation Front (FSLN) is much better suited to deal with the country's economic, infrastructural, educational, and health needs. Frankly, like so much of Latin America, the rich, city-dwellers are doing just fine while the campesinos who farm and fish elsewhere have next to no governmental support. If the U.S. would just stay out of Nicaragua, things would be fine. Thoughts? Insights? By the way, if you can read Spanish, visit La Prensa (http://www-usa.laprensa.com.ni/), one of the major Nicaraguan newspapers. Check out the politics section. It's great for those of us who want to know what's going on in the country, but who aren't there to see it happen in person.
