victor serge talks about georges valois in one of the early chapters of 'memoirs of a revolutionist'. valois went from anarchism to fascism (via monarchism) and back to anarchism again, before dying in a concentration camp. he was "very willing to discuss his syndicalist-royalist doctrine; he invoked Nietzsche, Georges Sorel, ‘the social myth’, the communal guilds of the Middle Ages, national sentiment."
i don't point it out to justify these nuts beliefs, but to show they aren't entirely new, and indeed run quite deep. i think part of the problem is with the failure to give an anarchism a solid definition based on its historical development, instead choosing to see it as some abstract opposition to the state and authority. this is a problem that applies to anarchists and non-anarchists alike; for example kropotkin, rocker, etc. attempting to argue that some "anarchism" could be traced back to taoism or whatever, as some eternal human spark.
Anglo-Saxon Philistine
25th March 2013, 17:21
I am not sure Valois was ever an anarchist - he was certainly influenced by the anarchist Proudhon, much to the chagrin of consistent anarchists, but also by the revisionist Marxist Sorel. He certainly considered himself a syndicalist, but what little I have read about him suggests that he always advocated a French state.

the footnote in my copy says he was an anarchist in the early 1900s, and returned to "left-wing, anti-state" positions before his death. i'm willing to take your word for it if you have read the man himself however.
that said, i think it compliments my point about how "anarchism" has been used to describe such a wide range of incoherent positions.
Anglo-Saxon Philistine
25th March 2013, 17:30
Oh, don't take my word for it - I read his contributions to the Cahiers du Cercle Proudhon (I'm too lazy to properly write accents) five years ago or more, and my memory isn't what it used to be. It is not altogether impossible that I'm confusing him with someone else or something like that.

i think its kind of silly to compare the two, the fantasy they wrote was very different, but i do like howard i have most of the original conan books.

It's funny that me and my ex where joking about this only a few weeks ago  . We where actually making fun of her flash in the pan ex b/f who was a right wing Libertarian who believed that the states only job was to protect capitalist interests and to ensure that laissez faire economics went undisturbed by such things as unions and workers rights. The little runt had the nerve to say that Anarchist Communism was a oxymoron while saying that Anarchist Capitalism was a totally viable ideology. Typical upper middle class trust fund baby who is not only a ignorant bastard with a sense of entitlement but is a uneducated idiot who thinks it's perfectly alright that he does not have to work a day in his life but that poor people should starve!
Anyway basically me and my lady friend where laughing and she said "what's next Anarcho-fascism?" bahaha . I honestly did not know that people thought that this could ever be a ideology or make any fucking sense at all! Fascism and especially Nazism make no sense to begin with (unless your the leader of course) as they are based off nothing but failing capitalism, reactionary politics that leads to scapegoating people and totalitarian states and as in the case with Nazism ultranationalism based around some mythical race that would be pure and free of inferior races . How in the name of fucking Marx does Anarchism go along with fascism at all in anyway? Fascism is nothing more then capitalism in decay propped up by authoritarian measures and absolute rule. Anarchism is and has traditionally been against private property, capitalism of any kind not to mention it is by very definition anti-statetist. How the hell can you have fascism without a very strong state behind it?
Okay I'm trying to make sense of something that makes no sense and I'm already reaching for a bottle of aspirin because it's giving me a headache. If ever there was a oxymoron in the purest sense of the term it would be Anarcho-fascism. Ffs what is the world coming to?

Okay that's a first as well. Jesus the more i read of this shit the more i realize how dumb people really are as in even dumber then i thought they where.
Granted i do consider myself a left wing nationalist and my tendency comes closest to Anarchist Communism. Though i hate labeling myself as anything but a Communist as i don't believe in orthodoxy of any kind.
But after abit of quick reading i see that Anarco-nationalism  is really Anarcho-ultranationalism which is a entirely different beast altogether. Left wing nationalism rejects racism and fascism while ultranationalism has been the driving force behind Nazism and basically every form of fascism. I think these idiots are just Neo-Nazis who are afraid to admit that they are just another bunch of white supremacist dirtbags.

Disgusting. We in the anarchist movement really need to start weeding these types of racists and bigots out of anarchism, otherwise the general public may get the impression that anarchism is a bigoted ideology.

I suppose if you were to the take the anti-semitic views held by Proudhon and Bakunin as canon that would land you in a weird place politically. That said fascism has always been absurd and contradictory in it's presentation. Claiming to be "anarcho-fascism" is only novel, if even that, in it's choice of label.
