I just finished reading "Ishmael". The book is insane. It's technically about a psychic gorilla trying to help a person save the world, but I got over that part very quickly. It's what the man and the gorilla talk about. It explains how humanity is wiping itself out, and that we have a chance to turn back, be we are afraid to take it.
One of the more interesting arguments is that we metaphorically revolted against the gods, we wanted to live alone for ourselves, and completely control the world. So we did. He also explains how farming is more of a curse in it's present form, because our surplus leads to huge famines and widespread starvation, and the more food we grow the more trouble we are in.
He suggest that people move back to pre-farming times, because we were in a better posistion at that time. He says people had all they needed, and had little need to expand, we just were forced by our societies myth to view it was negative.
Many other interesting things. Especially about religion and how Ishmael, the gorilla, views many of the stories.
