Greetings Comrades!

I'm writing a 25 page term paper on the Chinese Communist Party during the Sino-Pacific war. I want to focus it on why, both practically and ideologically they got into power. So far I have a lot of books on Mao with various and often contradictory viewpoints. I have: Red Star Over China which mostly portays a great love for Mao and the Chinese Communist Party, A critical introduction to Mao by Timothy Cheek which seems to be a more balanced approach, the Unknown Story: Mao by Jung Change (who really hates Mao). I also looked at some of Mao's own writing from Marxists.org. My class in on the Sino-Pacific war in general so I know the history of Japanese imperialism. However, I'm grabbed some books on the rise of the Chinese Communist Party itself and can't seem to find any reviews. So far I have:

China on the Eve of Communist Takeover: A dork Barnett
The Communist Conquest of China: Chassin
China: The Struggle for Power: 1917-1972 Thorton
Literary Dissent in Communist China: Goldman
Rebels and Revolutionaries in Northern China 1845-1945

I'm trying to get sourced from all political viewpoints so I can get a balanced perspective (for a lefty anyway ;)1) I still have yet to look through the vast collections of articles available on the subject. Anyway have any advice/favorite literature ?

Since the topic of your paper is concerning engagements and relations between Imperial Japan and China, if it were me I still would really discuss the Long March. There's quite a lot of information concerning it, written by both sides of the historical spectrum.

Needless to say, every Western historian who's written about the subject can't deny the tenacity and strategical planning of Zhou and Mao, as well.

It's just my opinion, but because Japanese withdrawal led right to the Chinese Civil War, I feel its pretty significant.

Remember, though, I'm just one person, so take my words with a grain of sand.
