Someone said that to me last night at the mall when I was with my girlfriend. I think he meant it in a derogatory way? If it helps I was wearing my red shirt with the yellow hammer and sickle on it.

A right-wing term for leftists, but usually more moderate center-leftists I think. It makes sense, if communists are "red", then a "lighter" leftist would have a lighter color.
Sounds like a badass shirt btw.

Never heard this term before. I've heard commie, red, terrorist, blah etc. but never Pinko. And it is an awesome shirt. Its right up there with my "Communists have no class" t-shirt lol

"Pinko" is an old smear term by Americans in the 50s but kind of started waning by the 70s. It was used in the same pejorative sense that right-wingers use the word "liberal" now. There's a double meaning of the person being an idealistic idiot out of touch with reality. Truth be told I really haven't seen the term too much but I guess it could be making a comeback because of all the socialist conspiracy nonsense around Obama (even the recent CPAC conference mentioned the "war against secular socialism").

It also has connotations of effeteness, i.e. marking the target as washed-out, decadent or even feminine/gay.

Yes, a pinko is a bourgieios-humanist-pacifist-social-democratic-liberal pseudo-lefitst whom the revolutionary terror organs will treat exactly like the enemies of the revolution deserve.

I was with my girlfriend? LOL. I think it was because of my shirt (hammer and sickle) when I wear that I usually hear them under their breath as they walk by "commie" or "commie scum". This one was unique because he said it to my face and that's the first time i've heard "pinko".

I find it amusing that people are even still using these old Cold War terms that were basically put in place to single people out, kind of like how muslims today are singled out as "terrorists". My friend's dad calls me a Pinko, but he does it jokingly.
As others have said, it's essentially a communist sympathizer; an actual communist party member is a Red while a sympathizer is a Pinko.

I think he said pinko because I was just wearing the shirt. Like sympathizing with it huh?

Most likely, yea. He would just think you're a sympathizer since the Soviet Union no longer exists. There's many people out there who think communism is a dead ideology.
On a related note, I actually want a shirt like that just to see how many people I can piss off.

I actually use that word from time to time to describe one of those annoying Coffee shop pseudo-leftist that will turn into someone's egotistical supermarket manager once he hits 40....you know what I mean.
BTW, with that badass shirt you most certainly do not fall into this category.

cold era relic, meaning somebody who was bordering on being a communist, was a sympathizer, but not actually a communist.
Nowadays people just use it to mean communist i think.

LOLseph has about explained it. If you're a Party member, you're a 'red'. If you're a sympathiser (what used to be called 'fellow travellers') you're a 'pinko'. Not quite a red.

So the proper response when being called a pinko would be "I'm not a pinko, I'm a red." That's what I say anyway.

Thank you. Yeah I hate coffee-shop leftists too. But I don't even think they're leftists. I think there is a more appropriate word for them: Liberals
