Eh, how could they have picked their "own" cotton? Who "owns" the cotton? The plantation owner? Sure. So do you pay all the whites a wage or enslave them too to do it in place of black slaves? How will you make the profit that slave owners did off cotton and other cash crops?

There's no way the southern labor pool would have been sufficient to handle the scope of the planting operations then, especially with technology the way it was. It would have necessitated a large pool of physical labor which would have either been done through slavery or allowing for a larger immigration of people from other parts of the world.

I don't know if there's anything good to say to this because it comes off the racist position that black people dragged the country down through welfare. You can argue all you want but if the asshole is bigoted to begin with then there's not much you can do.
