Squatters in multi-million dollar homes? Yes, in the tony beachfront Boca Raton, FL.
According to Zillow property records (http://www.zillow.com/homedetails/580-Golden-Harbour-Dr-Boca-Raton-FL-33432/46722602_zpid/), 580 Golden Harbour Drive sold for $2,478,410 in September of 2012. Now, not even a year later, it's bank owned. But that bank, Bank of America, isn't really in the property management business, which is why this giant home stood empty long, and apparently not very securely locked up. Enter Andre Barbosa– literally. The 23 year old is living in the home, claiming squatter's rights. The Sun Sentinel reports (http://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/palm-beach/boca-raton/fl-boca-squatting-in-style-20130122,0,4949608.story) that "The police can't move him. No one saw him breaking into the 5-bedroom house, so it's a civil matter. And representatives for the real owner, Bank of America, said they are aware of the situation and are following a legal process." And it's not an easy process. Instead, it will involve taking Barbosa to court.
"Adverse Possession"
It only gets more complicated. By evoking an obscure but never rescinded Florida law, Barbosa is using "adverse possession" to justify his claim in the house, as it allows a person to move in and claim title of a property "if they can stay there seven years." Florida has suffered more than one similar case. The Sun Sentinel makes reference to a "handful" of adverse possession claims making their way through the Palm Beach County Property Appraiser's Office, but Barbosa's stands out because the house he's possessing (adversely) is so valuable. And though Barbosa is certainly eccentric, posting a sign that he is the "living beneficiary to the Divine Estate being superior of commerce and usury" on the front of the home, he isn't stupid. He even contacted the Appraiser's Office to alert them that his tenancy had begun, presumably as he intends to stay for the required seven years.
Meanwhile, his wealthy neighbors are less than thrilled, clear enough from the comments left onBarbosa's Facebook page, where he goes by the name "Loki Boy," drawing on myth, comic books, and Hollywood to further deepen his intrigue.

Fucking A. I wonder if he is as ... eccentric as they're making out. Either way, it might inspire a few more people to do the same, who knows? I mean, it's not exactly going to bring down capitalism, but I know I'd rather be miserable in comfort than in squalor.

I think there is a thread ATM going by the name of 'what gives you hope'
Answer - This
Screw the bank, screw the rich neighbours, long live 'the living beneficiary to the divine estate being superior of commerce and usury'!
He may just be the greatest troll of all time (or nuts)

...
He may just be the greatest troll of all time ...

Part of me hopes this is the case.

...
(or nuts)

And part of me wants this to be true too.

Of course, 'both' is probably the best thing. If he has got mental health issues, then good luck to him, I hope he gets away with it.

And if he's just a troll, errm, good luck to him, I hope he gets away with it.

Adverse possession rights are a little-regarded treasure left over from English Common Law. Since it was heavily based on precedent, through time and tide, "finders keepers" rules emerged, which are the basis for modern "adverse possession" laws, which, unless explicitly outlined, base their authority back on those same legal precedents and the idea that if you dredge up a moldy old deed somewhere for some long-lost property your family owned aeons and aeons ago, you can't just evict the current tenant (who might have inherited the land from his forbears, who might have in turn inherited it from theirs, who turned the land into a useful. productive plot), and benefit from improvements.

Incidentally, Abbie Hoffman doesn't spend a great deal of time on the concept in, Steal This book, not as much as you might imagine, with subheadings like FREE FOOD; FREE TRANSPORTATION, &, importantly, FREE HOUSING. This doesn't, however, mean there's no good literature on the subject. Gregory Duhl writes one essay on the subject, again, drawing heavily on the connection of convention to property rights.

Honestly, I'm surprised more Leftists are doing what Ken Robinson did: blogs.dallasobserver.com/unfairpark/2011/11/ken_robinson_who_used_adverse.php

As they say, property is arbitrary. If your bows and arrows can't beat muskets, then the resources you once used will be blocked off, guarded by armed men, and declared for all eternity to rightfully belong to other people and be inherited as they see fit.

I saw this guy on 20/20 last night. Some old lady who lived besides him got to the point of be willing to pay for the property in cash just to get him out of there cause the whole neighborhood felt uncomfortable and scared due to his presence. He ended up getting kicked out unfortunately, but not before he made some rap video in the mansion.
