View Full Version : Whats the deal with "reputation" and "Rep power" on this site?

Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask, it just isn't really a political question.
I was just wondering what that meant on here. Obviously your rep grows with popularity and time, probably the amount of "thanks!" you get or something. But what significance is there in your "rep power"?

Next to the thanx button you can also give " rep ", both positive and negative with the scales button at the top right of each post. Your rep power determines how much the person you are "repping" gains in their own rep-count (neg repping someone will deduct half of your reppower from someones rep count, hence why some users are in the negative numbers...)

On top of what Psycho said, rep also mildly reflects your standing in the community. This is much more true for neg rep though, as most people won't take a person with negative rep serious (after all they had to have said some shit to get that neg rep no?). While that's not always the case (i.e Psycho could neg rep you into the red for making a joke about bouncers or something). When it comes to positive rep, it's more a measure of you're e-ego on revleft. Generally speaking, there's three ways to get good rep:
1. Be a chill guy/gal and say sensible things people like.
2. Post well thought-out and insightful things on poltical and social issues.
3. Say incredibly sectarian things only people in your tendency would agree with/insult/troll other tendencies and let the circle-jerk of repping begin.

4. Desperately ask people you agree with to give you reputation points.

Positive rep is the embodiment of a post-surplus gift economy.
Negative rep is generally something babies who think rep matters use when somebody they don't like says something, and I would argue that it's off-limits most of the time if you still want to pretend to be a reasonable adult. But I guess it's acceptable to use on obvious trolls. I also find it useful when people are spamming the unfair restriction or fascist alert thread with their crying, I sometimes negrep people in such cases saying 'stop spamming the thread already!' because I'd feel like a hypocrit posting off-topic in a thread to remind somebody not to post off-topic in the thread. This is effective and funny because the kind of person who cries into an appeal thread every 3 minutes for a week is usually the same kind of person who thinks rep matters so there's a double-whammy there!

I negrepped a person once, I think it was this "kiss my free and democratic ass (http://www.revleft.com/vb/laughable-forum-laughable-t153446/index.html?t=153446)" bloke. Afterwards, guilt consumed me and it still haunts me to this day. I haven't negrepped since.

I remember that post. Pure gold . That's a record number of "thanks" too I think on one post.

I've only ever neg-repped 3 people IIRC. Two of them have since been banned. The other isn't really posting anymore.
2/3 of the posts I negged were about suicide... (encouraging it or being an asshole about it in general) and the other one was for being an annoying fucker.

I think I have neg-repped only once in order to get back at somebody who neg repped me.

I've neg-repped a few times, although it takes something spectacularly bad to remind me that the function exists.
They all deserved it!

i think most people i neg rep are in OI, i returned the favor to freepalestine a few times too but that got old, now i just enjoy the regular individual red block he sends my way accompanied by the same old variations of calling me a filthy zionist and a fake leftist to break the monotony of the sea of green.

I think I've used negrep less than five times, primarily in OI. Gotten it from others a few times but not very often. I was amused recently, when someone negrepped me for posting the results of a BA vote in the admin actions thread.

I tried to neg rep once when that 14 year old tankie called me a 'pro-nazi piece of shit' but couldn't figure out how. I haven't had the urge to, since.

I've only ever negrepped a couple of people for being genuine arseholes. I usually leave a comment explaining why, but it probably falls on deaf ears.

I've never neg-repped anybody but I want to now just for fun. Rep basically measures e-penis size and as you can see mine is much bigger than yours :D
