View Full Version : How much are you hated for being communist?

I think the title says it all. How much hate do you receive for being a communist in your country or another. Do you get it often or not?
I almost can't say to anyone that doesn't really like me that I'm a communist because they will probably start yelling right/fascist stuff in my face and the whole "communism can't take place EVER. Look at USSR and the killings and blah blah blah".

Surprisingly most people I'm close to are pretty cool with it. My friends may not agree and think it's too radical, but they don't hate on me for it. My mother is also actually somewhat sympathetic. If I get any hate it's generally from random people.

When I move I want to get a DDR flag. I'll hang it up on my wall right where everybody can see it. It can be a sort of test of who is worthy to be in my house, hehe. If they see it and flee then obviously they don't pass the test. If they know what it represents then they're allowed staying. Nah, no being elitist .

Generally speaking I haven't told anyone I'm a communist. Though I do want to convert my girlfriend to glorious Mao Zedong Thought. I've given her a copy of Mobo Gao's book on China without mentioning it's pro-Mao bent. Perhaps I'll send her some more.
Also I don't think many people know what the DDR is. Your best bet is a Stalin poster like great comrade Slavoj

In the physic world and often in the virtual one, I do not tell people that I am a socialist since I hate arguing. When I ‘lose’ a debate or an argument I feel like an idiot.
No one knows I'm a communist. My family thinks I'm a liberal, still.
Some dick who reads this will probably use it as ‘evidence’ that liberals are secret commies.

I have never personally faced hate for being a communist (though I'm sure some people do, they have just never expressed it to me). My friends think it is a bit too radical, but they are okay with it. My parents try to ignore it.

You know, I used to be in the camp of "I don't talk about politics with people in 'real life'", but I actually enjoy talking about political issues with people. Not in a bombastic, aggressive manner, and not really about single issue topics (like healthcare, for instance), but I do genuinely like talking about larger issues, like what the role of government should be, the individual's place in a society, and that sort of thing, as well as talking about historical topics. It's rare that I'll meet someone who's also interested in these sorts of things too, though, so it is true that I don't talk about politics much. But not because it's something that I consciously avoid.

people at my work (co-workers, not management) know my views, the only one who really cares is this one white nationalist dude who calls me "commie" and "hippie" all the time, but that's as far as it goes. my friends all know, some of them sympathise with my views but don't feel any kind of dedication to it. my mother in law says she "understand where i'm coming from," but thinks it's better to fix the current system than overthrow it. all in all, i don't get a lot of hate for my views, but i don't really talk to a lot of random people about it.

I talk to everyone about politics, I direct the smallest comments to try to make a political point. I don't give people a chance to hate me. The way I frame arguments is as such that you can hardly disagree with my view. It is a question of respect. If you believe strongly in your logical argument and direct people through this that this problem can only be overcome through social revolution, then you won't be hated. Nearly everyone accepts me being a communist if they don't outright become inspired; and if they don't accept and respect me for my logical arguments, and can't refute my argument, they obviously stand on the lower moral ground and make me in turn hate them.

Not much actually and none from anyone that mattered. Ive had arguments with a few idiots that didn't matter and knew nothing of politics such as my ex's American Libertarian ex b/f who didn't know that Anarchist Communism existed and he thought that state Capitalism was Communism  . He just got pissed off and started sputtering like a old car on it's last legs. I did piss off this upper middle class idiot on the internet who was on my FB. She was all for drug testing welfare recipients and i shot everyone of her arguments down. The thing is most of her friends sided with me and all but 1 or 2 ended up agreeing with me :D . She then said that what i said was horrible and that i couldn't possibly mean that. Then she blocked me

When people ask me what my views are I don't get direct hate all that often. What I do get though all the fucking time is this: "Anarcho-communism? But that's a contradiction!" Or "Don't you realize your ideas won't work?" My favorite one though is from my republican uncle who will just blatantly say "you know, socialism doesn't work." Doesn't say anything more or offer any evidence to back it up, he just wanted to make sure that what I believe in will never work because, well... Socialism.

In the Bay Area, being revolutionary is dismissed more that outright hated in general. Workers tend to think you're just impractical and middle aged ones especially probably think you're like 70s Maoists; College students and professionals think you are quaint but obviously arn't relevant because our politics don't fit what some academic hack hawking a book on NPR says the world is like now and we don't have some new ethical lifestyle fad to offer.
Occasionally I get some shit from people - they are usually a little unhinged to begin with. More often I might get red-baiting in movements though this is a little less these days.

I'm not that much of an asshole to make people hate me and start accusing me for being a communist.
I don't have lot's of enemies, I'm trying to get along with everyone even fascists (when they don't push it too far). So I don't think it's for another reason

Personal hate? Nah, it doesn't happen. Some reformists in the party dislike me because I say things that they would prefer not to hear, and some people more generally think I am weird or have weird ideas, but that's all.
And I find it curious that people who aren't even organised as communists would face aggression on the part of conservatives or fashos. Perhaps it has to do with the political situation in the States, or perhaps it just means this is revleft.

Some of my friends dislike it, a few don't care, and a few actively engage with it. A few more dis-agree but respect my views.
I don't really suffer any persecution in my friends circle for my beliefs. If I did, then i'd not be friends with them.
Outside of that, you can get some more shit. Tends to be a correlation between activity and shit thrown at you. At the moment, i'm copping a fair bit.

No one really says stuff to me (6'4 240 lol). They know they'll get their stupid ass beat. Although when I used to be a communist, one day I took my soviet flag to school and this fat little freshmen tried to rip it out of my hand while screaming "commie". I punched that kid in the kidney for letting my flag touch the ground. I got suspended for 2 days and my mom got pissed. That's the only time I can remember anyone has ever said anything to me about my political stance, outside of debates.

White Nationalists NEVER talk about politics in real life. Since they have no idea what the f**k they are talking about, and they realize if any sane leftist is there, they can except an ass-whooping. Also, the great thing about us is that we can rely on politically correct resistance to help us out. People would much rather help the sane anti-racist mob than the lone bonehead.

The worst I've gotten is the occasional commentary from people while doing work for the Communist Party (such as gathering signatures in order to run for election, handing out the party newspaper, etc).
I'm fairly open about my political views if politics comes up in discussion, and it has led to some interesting debates. It tends to be respectful disagreement, because I tend to show respect to others' views as well. I can't think of any case of being outright hated or disliked for my political views (if I'm disliked, it's for other reasons).

I haven't really had any hate. My parents have some interesting ideas about what my politics are. My mum has called me a "terrorist" and a "thug" in the past. When I talk to most people about political issues, I'm usually pleasantly surprised by how sympathetic they are (although I don't usually mention that I'm an anarchist).

Hate is a strong word. Selling newspapers has gotten me into some interesting chats but only once have I been out and out insulted with no debate, and a chavvy crackhead looking fellow tried slapping me in the face in Southampton once but I think that's more cuz i'm quite short and vulnerable looking than because I tried getting him to overthrow his masters.

Not too much.
My parents are left wing and most of my friends are socdem or liberal (apolitical, really). My closest friends are couch socialists and they are the only ones who actually know of my political stance.
I have some weird quasi-fascist guys in my school, and I'm not sure whether they think I'm just fucking around with them when I say I'm an anti-fascist, or they really don't care.
So, no hate so far. I get more hate when arguing about gay rights, actually.

I'll echo the above statements that hate is too strong a word here. I've had people sneer at me and call me a traitor to the homeland (lol), but nothing more than that. I think that, generally, people are far more likely to judge you based on stuff other than your political affiliation.

me too. i do actually talk a lot about it, but not really in "single-issue" stuff like you say, but about work, gender, the state, and human civilization in general. i think a lot of people are "interested" in that sort of stuff in you phrase it in specific ways. but yeah, i mean people sometimes are "apathetic" about idk, what's obama's next move against north korea, but people are definitely interested about the immediate things in their life. for example, you can insert a lot of "radical" gender stuff when friends gossip about girls and sexcapades etc. like, fundamental issues to "why we do this" and the rituals in that sort of stuff. dudes when they "bro out" and drink some brews do have "deep" conversations about life in general etc. i think communism is fundamentally antipolitical, and the crucial things are not really about history, which is your favorite leftist electoral campaign, or favorite sects, but about very fundamental issues that relate to our experience as human beings viz. civilization.

Yea that's why I'm careful about who I discuss politics with. I don't work currently but if a political discussion were to come up I would be very very careful about what I say. I'm sure the capitalists would not trust a communist working for them, hahaha. You know, because of the threat to their power and such.

Get nothing from friends.
I've had only one small problem with boneheads because of a Lenin shirt. When I entered the tube station I immediately saw these two fascists; had to run a few blocks (today I would not be able to run as much and as fast, shamefully) and catch a bus. Nothing major.

Everyone 'cept the girl I'm with currently either disagrees with me or actively insults me for my beliefs. Everyone else pulls that "it can't work" crap or worse. I think I'm just not an interesting speaker.

I've also had to remain quite careful with what I talk about in the workplace. While I try to "agitate" for better wages and working conditions, I imagine that I would be fired quite quickly were it to become widely known that I was a Wobbly who reads anarchist literature for fun.
As for personally and physically coming into contact with the fash, the idea scares the shit out of me. I'm 5'2 and 90 lbs (with a moderate physical disability) so I feel that I would come out much the worse from any sort of confrontation.

Well my family doesn't "hate" me, but I do get a lot of crap from the corporate lawyer/right-wing hack side of my family. They're nice people, but backward politically. Some of my family is at least sympathetic, though.
Aside from one friend who's borderline-communist, most people I know from school (it's a small campus in the suburbs) are hardcore liberals, and I always dread election season because they try to throw their nonsense at me about being "so radical its unrealistic" whenever the topic comes up and I say I won't bother voting because I can't vote away capitalism.
So I guess nobody really "hates" me, they just take the "Oh, he'll grow out of it" attitude, which is almost more annoying.

I live in the Bay area so it's rather easy. There aren't actually that many socialists around so when you speak as one people treat it as arcane rather than dangerous. Workplace discussions are iffy because so many I find are non-political.
I was able to make a speech in my public speaking class abut the relationship between Marx and Lincoln during the civil war, during which I mention the McCarthyite activities of the Kennedy brothers and of both said, "good riddance," all of which I got away with without protest.

Girlfriend - Hates politics, doesn't care other than that.
Strangers - Few positive comments on my hammer & sickle shirt, couple dirty looks nothing major, nothing on any other shirt.
Fash - Have yet to actually encouter any face to face. I live in a small town in the north (u.s.) so I highly doubt I'll ever see any. Actually I saw one at a concert a few years ago, not in my town though.

Have the anarchist flag in my living room on the wall. Everytime people who don't know my views come over they ask about it, and i get to have a nice discussion of anarchism. My close friends know my views and are are pretty fine with it. I have an anarchist best friend and a communist friend as well. My other friends tend to be liberal leaning. I have one bestfriend who has some conservative views but also a lot of liberal views. He picks on my views jokingly but i've known him since we were kids so we don't hate on each other even if our views are different. My mom knows my views and is sympathetic but also more a die hard liberal. My dad thinks my views are too radical and always tells me i'll be unhappy in life if i continue to think that way and i'll never be content or satisfied. Other than that i don't get hate, if i do it'd be total strangers and authoritarian douchebags.
