So, i was writing my usual(maybe not for here) rant against hard rock and REM in the "things that annoy you" thread when i decided, ok im going to find an example.

i look it up not knowing any of the bands or lyrics or whatever and this is what i found. since it wasnt what i was looking for i decided to see if it was a good example of why i hate everything about hard rock.

im sure youll know why my mind is now recoiling, shutting down, and i am somewhat speechless.

WHAT JUST HAPPENED. I still hate it, but not everything about it. I doubt it is as awesome as some would think the lyrics were, or that the band was really into it (rather than using it to make money off of a somewhat popular sentiment) but... WHAT.

what happened to all the jingoistic "we are soldieeerrrrrs durrr" and "why blame america hurrr" or "the B!tch came back im a dudebro look at me"

Its in no way catchy like System of a down (which ill tolerate)

but wtf.

so yeah. post your moments because im also trying to build my own prestige by jumping on the train to create a sticky, hopefully... maybe... (because cynicism, yay!)

Let me see if I understand you correctly. You donīt like the music you posted at all but you feel it has some merit which you arent able to put your finger on. Am I close?

Shocking. A band fronted by a progressive who's also a lesbian isn't about right-wing jingoism or misogyny.

Most metal fans donīt consider nu- metal as metal. I sure donīt anyway. The riffs in nu- metal are usually grooves which owe more to post- grunge and/or post- hardcore. I myself reject the term nu- metal and prefer to call it modern hard- rock and Iīm not the only metalhead who does this. That said; this is of course just my fan perspective and I donīt claim anyone is upholding objective truth in these matters.

Especially since "objective truth" here is dependent on a preconceived set of genre markers. It's a matter of definition, in short.

But yeah I agree, nu metal sucks serious ass, but I don't really care if it's called metal or not as I'm not hung on the special importance awarded to that sacred word "metal".

never heard of Otep?

Rt_7jaX8CsY

pretty conventional nu metal with left-wing lyrics, almost makes you want to like them...

I used to like a lot of cheesy nu metal when I was a freshman, I still think Korn's first three albums are eerie sludgish grunge incorporating a lot of funk/hip-hop and is pretty cool if you isolate it from almost everything else in metal between 1999-2004

Which was absolutely implied in what I wrote.

Itīs not just about "sacred words" as far as Iīm concerned but how one defines a genre and itīs boundaries.

I call it hard rock because it plays on the hard-rock station they play at work.

even then, i was very verry briefly into nu metal but still. meh.

If it doesn't feature Scandanavian dudes burning churches or digging up corpses in the cemetery, it's not metal!

I liked it and if System of a Down is nu-metal then nu-metal isn't bad in my book. I generally don't give a crap about titles of genres though, which creates a lot of confusion when I try talking music. I like what I like, that's about it.

i find genre labels somewhat useful, especially in metal, since i'm very divided on my preferences in that area. i like death metal, symphonic metal, folk metal, some sludge/doom metal and a lot of crust punk crossover metal, but i hate most power, prog, thrash and nu-metal (old Machine Head being a notable exception)

Norwegian, to be precise.
Swedes are unsatisfactory. Finns and Danes, I don't even have to say anything.

My impression was that Norwegians were more into black metal, while Swedes were more into death metal.

there was a lot of crossover in the 80s with norwegians doing the death metal thing then they got into the black metal but still made lotsa death metal, now both are kinda everywhere

It kind of sucks because OTEP was playing in Modesto Friday with a band I hang out with regularly and I was going to go to the show but it turned out to be a 21+ show. God damnit one more year, just one more year!

Fuck 21+ shows. They're the thing I hate most about venue scenes.

Actually I just found out they played at the place today, misunderstood what someone told me, and it was open to all ages. Fuck me, now I'm even more pissed.
