I've read about 3D printing in the past, I've noticed recently a lot has come up like this about printing weapons which is getting some people into wondering about legal ramifications of it.
I'm not familiar with gun terms and parts though, what do they meam when they said they printed a "lower"? It seems they used that to modify an existing weapon to increase its rate of fire.
Also
“I don’t consider myself a tech guy, but I do consider myself a crypto-anarchist (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crypto-anarchism),” he said."
lol

Crypto-anarchy is pretty cool. I liked watching Chuck Schumer fly into fits of impotent rage over the Silk Road a while back.

glorious. i worked with primitive 3d printing when i was at uni. super cool.
i imagine 3d printing will be an everyday item in the future. that would be so sweet. fuck you im printing all kinds of shit.

I find this development interesting. They may make 3d guns illegal, but unless they make the technology itself illegal-prohibited-regulated, don't make 3d printers, etc it still will have an effect on how one can come about with a weapon.

So they've made a "lower" and it appears that they've made a magazine as well.
But what about the upper? Guns are pretty useless without barrels, and I hardly imagine plastic to be a suitable material for making them.
I'm not sure that current 3D printing methods for metals are up to the task, either.

the firing pin and action also need primarily metal components. there are too many pieces a 3d printer cannot reproduce for this to be much, if any, use to anyone. now that said, a CO2 powered dart rifle (practically useless in a combat situation, but invaluable for covert action) could be very easily reproduced in this manner, i think one could be made from nearly 100% plastic, with only the gas cartridge, rubber gaskets and the darts themselves (along with whatever concoction you're putting in them) needing independent acquisition.
