i think dilla's donuts is probably the greatest sample-based album of all time, and this track in particular is genius:

original:

some context, because on the surface it perhaps isn't that impressive; 'donuts (intro)' / 'welcome to the show' is the last song on j dilla's last album. he was dying as he produced it, and it was released on the week of his death. the original song, motherlode's 'when i die' is obviously about, well... death, and yet that's never quite clear when dilla flips it on his track, as if he wanted the listener to go digging for that secret - and really, fucking heartbreaking - message.

plus it's just typical dilla; a very short, kinda wonky snippet of a song turned into something really beautiful and immersive. and really emotional, which is kinda absent in a lot of beat music (imho).

The Beastie Boys using The Ocean by Led Zeppelin was pretty good.

For me, the greatest sample-based music makes something really great out of awful source material. My favorite song of all time is I'm God by Lil B which is based off a really cheesy Imogen Heap song.

Hunting down samples from hip hop tracks is the best way to learn about soul, disco, bebop, and funk.
