i think dilla's donuts is probably the greatest sample-based album of all time, and this track in particular is genius:

some context, because on the surface it perhaps isn't that impressive; 'donuts (intro)' / 'welcome to the show' is the last song on j dilla's last album. he was dying as he produced it, and it was released on the week of his death. the original song, motherlode's 'when i die' is obviously about, well... death, and yet that's never quite clear when dilla flips it on his track, as if he wanted the listener to go digging for that secret - and really, fucking heartbreaking - message.
plus it's just typical dilla; a very short, kinda wonky snippet of a song turned into something really beautiful and immersive. and really emotional, which is kinda absent in a lot of beat music (imho).
