I've been watching a bunch of episodes of this recently, it's a pretty interesting show. It's all about people who from the USA or the UK or Australia who find themselves in jail abroad. A lot of the people were really dumb, like "Oh, I didn't realize at the time that trying to smuggle 10 pounds of heroin out of southeast Asia was frowned upon!" Others were set up, or kidnapped by terrorists or guerrillas.

Best episode I've seen so far was some kid from the UK who got busted selling hash in Kuwait (where you do not want to get busted with drugs!), got threatened with execution before being thrown in a shitty Kuwaiti prison, and escaped during the beginning of the first Gulf War. There was another one in which some guy from Australia escaped from Indonesian prison that was pretty good.

They should do some episodes covering people who the US extradited to places like Libya to get tortured.

The one with the Australian escaping from the Indonesian prison is my favorite. He was just one unlucky guy! First he gets prosecuted for a crime his friend Doggy committed, and then when Doggy tries to break him out of jail, or rather the mental institution he cleverly got himself sent to, he falls through a roof into a room with the violent offenders in it, priceless! He was one hardcore motherfucker, the shit he went through.

But yeah, most of the others are just idiots who strap a bunch of coke to their thigh and act all surprised when customs catches them. Great show though, I'm a fan.

Yeah man, that guy turned into a badass commando or something in prison. He tried escaping at least three times, got shanked to death and then came back to life...in the morgue! G-status

I like the show.

While I was watching the episode of the English journalist who was imprisoned in Pakistan, I realized there could also be a show about people from abroad being locked up in American prisons. The prison system in the USA incarcerates thousands of undocumented immigrants along with other non-Americans who have been convicted of crimes in the USA. I know for a fact that there are American prisons with similar or worse conditions than prisons in so-called "third-world" countries.

Yeah, I remember watching the episode about prison in South Korea and thinking that it didn't look that bad there...well, for prison anyway, prison sucks regardless of nation. But the dude imprisoned there did have a pretty big window in his rather spacious cell, which looked quite a bit larger than most American prison cells.

Other prisons in the show though like "Los Teques" prison in Venezuela look like hell on earth.

Do you mean "Banged Up Abroad"? I've seen a few episodes and I sympathised with some but with others I couldn't help thinking that a lot of it came down to their own stupidity.

Anyone should fear being locked up in the United States just as much, if not more than being locked up abroad. In the early 1990's I spent 17 months in a New York state prison and the conditions were abominable. I came across this story about a man being thrown into solitary confinement for two years and then being forgotten. This was not even a state prison, it was a county jail.
