Truly horrid. I thought the bloody deserts where I live were bad for someone who wasn't your typical hetero-machoman-with-illegal-shotgun, but this is just depressing.

And LOL at the fucking shitheads calling acceptance of homosexuality 'western cultural imperialism'. Fucking ethnic-loving pricks will look for any excuse.

ironically over half the anti-sodomy laws in the world are the same laws implemented by the british empire.

I remember watching this documentary some time ago. Decent over all. My favorite part was when the host told that bigoted government official that he was gay; you could noticeably see the difference in his demeanor, was hilarious how insecure these reactionaries are.

"Western cultural imperialism." How many there justify their homophobia by Christianity, which is hardly native to Uganda?

I am guessing it would be quite a bit. However, I think it is interesting to note that if it wasn't Christianity it would be Islam as, if I remember correctly, there were some campaigns by middle eastern states to establish Islamic rule there. As we know Islam is scarcely (not) more queer friendly than its theistic counterparts.

Islam. Another foreign import to Uganda.

I think the ironic thing is for these people saying that homosexuality is a cultural import is that the laws these countries were considering like in Uganda were essentially written up and encouraged by certain groups in the United States. Much as they do here they were propping up homosexuality as a convenient target to attack and distract from economic problems and corruption.

I don't remember what the "Kill the gays" bill is at right now. The attention increased in 2010-2011 which is when this BBC piece was aired, and the embarassement kind of led the Ugandan parliament to hush it up fearing it would look bad for foreign investment and aid. The guy who originally introduced it seems to be repeatidly trying to bring it up every session as far as I understand from the wiki page on it. It seems the speaker of parliament promised that she would pass it while the president has given signals he would veto it.
