True, I agree that a 40 something odd year old revolution will need a definite miracle to revitalize it. IE Che come back from the dead. And I don't think that the American dollar being in Cuba is either 1.) Their fault or 2.)A sign of capitalism. IT's not their fault because they're 90 miles off of the southern coast of America for Christ's sake, and it's not really a sign of capitalism allthough the allmighty dollar is in fact pure capitalism. It's not capitalism unless it's used for capitalism, buying from a generic nationalized department store wouldn't be capitalism.

The dollar economy in Cuba is a tragedy - it has set up two systems (capitalist within socialist), two classes (tourists and Cubans) and has created an environment ripe for encouraging prostitution and crime (this has been a real effect).

There is no reason why tourists should not be able to exchange their foreign currency for Cuban pesos when they enter Cuba. This way the Cubans would not be excluded from parts of their own territory and would not sell themselves and their self respect for Yanqui dollars. The government would receive exactly the same amount of foreign currency. The Cuban people would not be degraded and demoralised by being treated like second class citizens in their own home.

I am truly surprised that Castro doesn't change this system, having seen its terrible effects. I don't believe tourism would suffer at all if the dollar economy were scrapped. It threatens to undermine socialism in Cuba.

im going to cuba this summer. but i want to see the real cuba fuck turist sites. although when i go and see the real cuba i think it is best for me to take with me only a few cuban pesos and some simple cloaths. i think the turrist/dollar economy of a turist/cubans society is a very sad thing. this ilsutrates how hard it is to change society by way of revolution... sad sad sad

I doubt he'll change anything. He's lost sight of things. I admire what he has done for Cuba thus far, but he's gone soft on capitalists. He's become a tired man who's death, or retirement is near. I don't see him doing anything to upset the balance of things before then.

In response to tavareesh, Socialism is an uphill battle. Not just an uphill battle, but one in the rain. You must continue to move, or the mud beneath you will bring you back down. Revolution is not just the uprising, that's the easy part, revolution is also the battle to keep things moving, not to lose sight of your goals. Our greatest weakness, as Revolutionaries, as Socialists, is that we see only as far as the death of the old Government. What of the Government we would lead? How long would it take for the Bourgeoisie to take action against it? How long before it disintigrates and becomes what we hate, out of neglect or even greed.

The Soviets have nothing to offer Cuba now - they can't even sustain their own economy, no matter its form. Cuba can promote tourism exactly as it is doing, without the need for the dollar economy - this is a fairly recent change and is not necessary. If other countries were prepared to enter into more substantial trade agreements with Cuba, the effects of the blockade could be minimised. But there is no political will whilst the world is under the thumb of the US gov - just political cowardice.

Still, note the universal (although minority) support for the principles of socialism through solidarity groups existing everywhere. I am seriously thinking about joining the Aus group - you travel to Cuba to help with the sugar harvest once a year and organise other projects.

I read about a Canadian doctor who went to Cuba on holiday and ended up giving up her medical career to become a full time supporter of the revolution, organising support and projects back and forth from Canada.

Hundreds of thousands of aids patients in Africa right now can't receive available AIDS medication. You know why? Because the medication costs too much for any of them to buy it. When African governments wanted to provide them with the cheaper generic brands of the same medications, the U.S. government and U.S. based pharmaceutical companies (butchers!) fought very hard to make it impossible. Why? Generic brands give no profit to the pharmaceuticals that developed the original.

Intellectual property rights or individual existance rights? Which would you rather have?

Nobody in their right mind would choose to live in cuba. Cuba has moved to Miami. The richest city in the U.S. Proof that REAL CUBANS are ENTREPRENEURS & DEMOCRATIC and in LOVE with the United States.

Aids in Africa is not the fault of the United States.

We wouldn't even have medicine if it weren't for capitalism. New Technological advances requires large sums of human resources. Human resources that must be compensated for. People don't become doctors and bust their asses to make new medicines so they can make the wage of someone working at McDonald's.

Only when workers are enslaved or the community is harmed - does capitalism become evil (which is rare).

Afghanistan is now a free country because of American bombs. Maybe you should watch the liberal news and see that women can now walk the streets of Afgahnistan without having to cover their faces. Men can shave once again. The Taliban is fucking history!

As for medecine and capitalism...
in the soviet union they developed a kind of medecine, phages i think they were called. Small viruses that target only specific kinds of disease-causing bacteria. They were widely used in the USSR, and highly effective, because they evolve to adapt to defences which bacteria evolve, which our medecine cannot.
Strange thing is, because the USSR used it, it was disapproved of in the west, so we're stuck with shit. Wheras, strangely, we do use some phages on animals, such as horses.

The American's may not have caused AIDS, but they are doing nothing to help solve it. They could be doing a lot more then they are, reducing the cost of treatment, offering doctors, giving facilities. All of the things that an almost bankrupt Cuban Government are doing.

I agree that the United States is not perfect.

The United States has supported evil dictatorships - in support of it's own interests:

Batista in Cuba

Shaw of Iran

Sadamm Hussein

Royal Family in Saudi Arabia

Noreiga in Panama

The Mafia in Fascist Italy

The List Goes On.

I must agree that the United States is not perfect, nor has a clean history, and at times will ally with evil to take out bigger evil.

Fuck - I've lost this debate.

My point is this - The United States is evolving for the better. I would like to see the United States grow into a United World - where everyone has the freedoms that we enjoy in our country.

However I think that the United States could take China easily. The Chinese people don't even like their own government. They would be our best allies in defeating the Chinese Government.

And the evolution is not new - The United States has been evolving since the 1700s. We grow better and stronger every year and we contribute to the betterment of this world despite our McDonald's and Disney World Capitalistic Invasion.

And Afgahnistan will be better because of our intervention - no doubt. Hopefully democracy will reign in Afgahnistan and hopefully they will have some McDonalds to go to and eat an Afgahnny Big Mac. I think our American bombs are more tolerable than the Taliban.
