A teacher of special needs children in Indiana is speaking out with other Christian parents and students by demanding LGBT kids be banned from a Sullivan High School prom. When asked, teacher Diana Medley responded to a reporter that she believes gay people have no purpose in life, and agrees that anti-gay parents and students should create a separate, traditional prom that would ban gay students from attending. Sullivan High School itself is allowing all students to the official prom, but these militant anti-gay Christians are trying to get students to attend their prom instead of the schools official prom.
Diana Medley is a special education teacher in town. She doesnt believe anyone is born gay, mywabashvalley.com reports:
I believe that it was life circumstances and they chose to be that way; God created everyone equal, said Medley.
Homosexual students come to me with their problems, and I dont agree with them, but I care about them. Its the same thing with my special needs kids, I think God puts everyone in our lives for a reason, said Madley.
So the same goes for gays? Do you think they have a purpose in life? No I honestly dont. Sorry, but I dont. I dont understand it. A gay person isnt going to come up and make some change unless its to realize that it was a choice and theyre chosing [sic] God, said Medley.
Medley, sadly, is in good company. As mywabashvalley.com reports, students, parents, and Christian pastors met at a local church to discuss gay students at prom, and theyre ganging up to raise money for a separate prom.
Medley should be placed on immediate suspension and steps should be taken to ensure she receives the counseling she needs before she is allowed back into a classroom. She has no business teaching or counseling any student right now if she places her personal religious beliefs above her job and fiduciary responsibilities to children, and if believes that gay people have no purpose in life.
How can an LGBTQ student possibly be forced to be taught by someone who thinks they have no purpose in life and should choose God over being who they are?

I seriously hope she gets fired.

^Unfortunately, I wouldn't be surprised if she gets a promotion.
Is this really where we're at in 2013? Segregating school dances based on sexual orientation?
It's like it just gets worse and worse everyday, it's really disheartening.

In the deep south proms are still often segregated based on race.
Fuck promcoming tho.

Gay people have no purpose in life? No, they just have purposes in life other than breeding like fucking rabbits, you small-minded bigoted piece of Christian shit.
The gay kids and all their friends should crash the homophobes' prom, in the most flamboyant way possible. The bigots thoroughly deserve it.

Honestly, if this had happened at my high school, I would've been happy. I think the bigots have the right idea in withdrawing from mainstream society. LGBTQ people and our allies don't want them around, and I'm sure the high school's prom will be a much nicer place without a bunch of homphobic jackasses everywhere. Now if we could just get them to stop talking.

Hopefully the religious are treated like losers in school, like they are in most. Imagine how lame a christian prom would be!

No touching, no dancing, and no hugging unless it's the Christian sidehug.

I wonder if these homosexual kids who are going to her for advice know her views on their sexuality. They really ought to find someone else to turn to if they have problems. I doubt she will be fired, in a setting like this the liberal types tend not to be "boat-rockers."

Teacher should be punched in the nether region over and over and over again.

What's more concerning to me is that the teacher was apparently joined in by other parents in making this request. Really terrible people have such dark hearts to wreck other student's lives so they can feel comfortable with their bigoted views.
It doesn't help improve perceptions of Indiana being a conservative dump either.

What happened to separation of church and state? :crying:
o well this is ok I guess

I really grow tired of the whole debate on whether or not homosexuality is a choice or not. Why does the anti-homosexuality crowd think it matters and push it as if everyone will all of a sudden decide to pray the gay away if they're right?

It never existed as far as Religionists were concerned.

But yeah, this is not a new practice on the bigots part. They have been doing this kind of double-speak nonsense for a while; whether it is "traditional proms" or "heterosexual awareness" projects they have this warped tendency to try and to revert society to a time where all sexual minorities were completely dis-empowered instead of merely oppressed.

Having been to some parties by Catholics from Latin America, I think you are all confusing "Christian" with "Protestant". Yeah, protestants are as boring as fuck, but Catholics know how to get down. Every time I go to Latin America it seems I end up getting drunk because it's the holiday of someone's favorite saint, etc. I guess life is easier when you can sin a little and go to confessional afterwards.
Prom is such a reactionary cultural institution anyways. Of course it feels weird for religious conservatives to have LGBT people at prom because prom is pretty obviously grounded on deeply hetero-normative ideas. Pulling those two things apart is difficult, especially for people who idolize all this nonsense. Prom ultimately reaffirms weird aristocratic notions of beauty, wealth, comfort and sexual desire, though in a completely ironic way since it's through a bunch of drunk highschool students blowing a couple hundred bucks on clothes and a limo, then trying to look graceful and dress like Kate Middleton or Frank Sinatra while freaking badly on the dance floor to Lil'John's "Get Low" (or whatever the modern trashy, misogynistic rap song is). My friends and I only had a good time at that stupid event because we all somewhat rebelled against its ideological absurdities. While the LGBT community obviously has every right to demand a right to go to prom with their dates of the same sex, really they're almost better off just saving money on the outrageously expensive ticket price, limo price and clothing price and being able to afford the most awesome highschool rager ever.
