Engels owned a mill, right? Why didn't he give the means of production to the workers? I've always wondered why.

Its a good question, simply because it wouldn't have made a difference in the grand scheme of things; workers control is not necessarily a road to socialism. I am sure that given his radical convictions, he would have probably been the best and most humane member of the bourgeoisie out there. Ultimately what Engels did with the money and factories he inherited, was support and fund Marx. Marx was poor and without Engels would not have been able to dedicate himself to developing the Marxist method, not to mention Engels contributed much theoretically himself.

Thanks. I knew he funded Marx, and Marx lived in poverty for many years- I've seen his house from 1851-56, and it is next to a strip club, opposite an alley with sex shops, 'massage parlours' etc.
Soho is one of the worst places in London.

Worst? Strip clubs and sex shops? Sounds like Marx lived in party town.

The man was known for being quite promiscuous. Him and Engels liked to party.

Hey, Marx.
Yes, freddie?
Is this stripper bourgeois?
No, Fred, she is a lumpen proletarian
Oh, I just feel an uprising in my lower classes!

Engels was pretty cool, someone once described him as 'the great beheader of champagne bottles'. If you read his confession you get a good idea of what he was about, jollity, chaff, chateau margaux 1848, excess of any sort and his personal motto "take it easy"

Marx's is much better. I think Engels was on a lazy day.

Did Engels own the place? I was under the impression he worked under his dad.

If Engels did own the business, he could have gone full Robert Owen.
And talk about two great guys, partying and theorizing. I'm sure their best came out when drunk, it happens to all of us.

I've read some hella fun stories about Karl Marx's party days, smashing gas lamps and running from cops, etc.
I also suggest you make your way to Germany some time and visit Trier. They have a little museum in Marx's childhood home and it's p. interesting. Not to mention the other awesome shit in Trier if you're a history dork.

lol, the Soho Marx lived in poverty in was much differed. Soho is a bit seedy with prostitutes and sex tourism but its a really expensive place to live with expensive (non-strip) bars, cafes etc. It's all quite nice, middle class, and touristy for the most part. There are much worse places in London.
