View Full Version : 'We all have McDonalds in common'

Saw a TV ad yesterday.
Ad was about a seemingly working class single mum at her son's footy match. She says she's thinking of letting her boyfriend move in with them, the son is not pleased but says ok.
The boyfriend tries to engratiate himself with the son (offering to help him fix his bike, offering him a lift to school) and each time the son refuses saying 'Nah, you're alright'
Then one day they're left on their own and they decide to go to McDonalds. The son offers the boyfriend one of the pickles from his burger, the boyfriend says 'Nah, you're alright' knowingly and they both smile.
Cue slogan - 'We all have McDonalds in common'

...and I wanted to jump off a bridge.

As a former employee of McDonald's I can tell you this happened a lot surprisingly.

Also former employee but I was in the kitchen 98% of the time so saw very little family reconsiliations to warm my cynical heart

I don't understand why anyone would go to McDonald's over better options like KFC or Burger King.

McD's burgers are too small overall, the buns are too starchy giving one a bloated feeling after eating, the patties seem to be made more out of cardboard or soya rather than ground beef, the fries are reconstituted and have added sugar (why?!), and the soft drinks are too watery and sometimes you can taste detergent in them because the drinks machine hasn't been rinsed out properly after washing. About the only thing going for McD's are the milkshakes, although I've heard that they've got more potato in them than milk (yet more starch!), and they might well have gotten worse in the years since I've had one.

Mind you, I think the best fast food places are those, how do I describe them, little independent outlets with names like Chicken Delite or what have you. I have one nearby that offers a wide variety of greasy but enjoyable fare, including kebabs, fried chicken, burgers and pizza, as well as deals like 2 cheeseburgers and fries for £2.50. The quality ain't quite as good as KFC or Burger King, but the prices are more affordable.

I mean we'd all rather be at morleys but mcdonalds is cheaper than burger king and kfc, is more prevalent and obviously has the brand attraction. that's why people go.

I think Wendy's is a bit better than Burger King or McDonald's, personally. Although I like regional fast food chains (like White Castle) best of all.

Just to clarify, the reason for my OP was that the ad really pissed me off; such a cynical, depressing angle to hock more burgers. Ads in general piss me off, especially those of the global super brands (couldn't they stop now, I mean, not to be too simplistic or over-stating, but EVERYONE knows how McD and Coke are, no risk of that changing in the next few decades at least)

When I was younger and ate fast food, Wendy's was my personal favorite. Only been to white castle once, it was okay.

Open 24hours and €1 hamburgers make McDonalds the best choice at 3am when you've spent all your money on beer.

Re: KFC

I was in Spain for a month and a half over this last summer and met a lot of people. I told a lot of them I was from Kentucky. And I would always add a reference to race horses and bourbon after in case they weren't familiar because I thought that's what Kentucky was best known for.

And every single time they would say "And KFC!" WTf!

The closest thing I've actually seen to a nice family moment was when a dude said he was going to kick his wife in the throat if she didn't shut the fuck.

Wendys is the best of all fast food. And Taco Bell. And Panda Express. I can't eat at Wendys or Panda anymore though, and it fills my heart with sadness.

It's all about the Munchy Box. Though I fear only West Coasters (of Scotland, the real West Coast come at me) will know what I'm on about.

Bonus if it comes with a free can of juice as well.

I've got Munchy Box's in Aberdeen and a lovely variety of Highland towns.

I'm gonna buck the trend up in this muvvahhh and say that I think it's a pretty good advert; it's well thought out and quite endearing, I suppose, so it ticks the boxes. Should you appreciate the craft itself it seems fair to say the team behind it did an altogether decent job, much better than that 'A is for... B is for...' one, that didn't really do anything for me. Oh hey did I mention that I actually read Creative Review?

Get them in take away's on George Street. I'd be surprised if there are any cities in Scotland were you couldn't get a Munchy Box if you tried hard enough, or Salt and Sauce, Pizza Crunch, Pie and Roll etc etc.

Salt and Sauce is a totally Edinburgh thing though.

Salt and Sauce is a totally Edinburgh thing though.

But if you looked hard enough in any major city in Scotland you could probably find it. Salt and Sauce defiantly isn't common outside Edinburgh though.

Where I live, KFC is ridiculously expensive for the quantity of food you get and the fried chicken is too soggy.

Agree about Burger King though.

However, Wendy's trumps them all since it actually tastes like real meat - double the calories though lol.

In-N-Out is the best around here IMO. Though it's a delicacy with their prices. You get paid like $10/hour just starting out which is crazy good for fast food. You also have to have at least one year of experience in the fast-food industry to work there. That's just looking for burgers though, they don't do much else. Just burgers, fries, and shakes I believe.

I have a weakness for fast food, any fast food. It almost always taste better than ‘home food.’ The only exceptions are the pizze that my mum makes from scratch, and she rarely makes those.

That sucks. I know a lot of people like this and it makes me thankful my mom knows how to cook awesome shit. I always take pictures of the food my mom makes and text them to those friends just to mess with them. Look what I'm eating, delicious piece of chicken breast that my mom opened up and put bacon and ham in. Mmmm, this homemade Oreo cake is delicious.

Fuck I'm hungry now :(

stick it in the oven on 350 until it's hot and the skin is kinda getting crispy

then just eat it like that.

Big Tasty burger is the only thing good at McDonalds outside of breakfast. They seem to withdraw it and then bring it back every so often.

McDonalds breakfast bagels and hash browns are amazing though. I think. The only time I make it for McDonalds breakfast is at 5am opening time on my way home drunk; so they could actually be disgusting.

No, the hashbrowns are really delicious. Someone tells me they're going to McDonald's for breakfast I'll tell them just to pick up hashbrowns for me, that's like the only good thing on the breakfast menu, IMO, which really sucked for me since I used to work opening shift at McDonald's for a while.
