View Full Version : Confused! NEED HELP!

Alright, I have looked everywhere for an adequate answer to this and have found nothing.
So, I have smoked weed for quite a long time now, but very recently a few times that I have smoked my lips and tongue have swollen up, sometimes my cheeks too. I have also recently quit smoking cigs as well.
I have looked online, asked people, etc. and have not really found a good answer yet. The weed isn't laced with anything (it hasn't happened to anyone else I smoke with). It's very weird too, because sometimes it will happen, and then other times it won't.
There are a few possible things that I think it might be from, but I am not sure.
1. I am allergic to my new metal bowl. I have heard stories of trumpet players that get swollen lips and tongues from the metal on their trumpets, and that could be a possibility. It doesn't seem to happen when I smoke out of my glass bubbler, yet it has seemed to happen a few times I have smoked joints, etc. so i'm not sure about this. I have also smoked out of this bowl before without it happening.
2. Irritation from the smoke. I think this is less likely, but because this happens so randomly this might be it perhaps? When I have a drink beside me it doesn't seem to swell as much when it happens too.
3. I am allergic to something that is being used to grow the weed. This isn't the same as it "being laced" but I may be allergic to some fertilizer or something used to grow the weed (it seems to happen more with the weed bought from one dealer than others).
4. I am allergic to weed. This seems very unlikely, as I have smoked regularly for a long time and just recently these things started to happen. It also doesn't happen everytime I smoke weed too.
It isn't life-threatening dangerous either. I can breathe fine when it happens, and while the swelling is noticeable (and embarrassing) it isn't painful or that bad and goes away after about an hour. It's just very, very, very, very annoying.
Anything you guys can offer can help. I am desperate for an answer to this, because when it happens it gets really annoying.
Thanks
EDIT: I am also not just "tripping balls" or some shit either. It is not just cottonmouth.

Sounds like 3. Something in that batch (as you say, some fertilizer or chemicals used to grow the weed) might be doing it.
I suggest you conduct a series of experiments over several evenings and note your results.

I would reccomend a vaporizer. Also, smoke more weed.

There's absolutely no healthy answer to this. Obviously I would say if you're taking any drug that's having this affect on you then stop taking it.
You're not going to do that so at least use this (http://www.magic-flight.com/). Don't even bother saying you can't afford it if you're smoking weed all the time. And if you're struggling in your head about whether you can afford it over buying more weed then you have a dependency problem which you might want to look at. And not in a "tolerance break" kinda way.

I think that the fertilizer idea is the most likely. Switch to tobacco pipes either way ;)1

No, there probably is a healthy answer to this.

As I said before, this just recently started, and I have been smoking for over 3 years.

1. Yeah, vapes are good. Thinking about getting one for a long time now.
2. Weed isn't physically addictive, and I would go so far to say it isn't even mentally addictive. Thankfully, I have quit smoking cigs, but when there were times I couldn't smoke weed didn't even cross my mind (I could have cared less if I was high or not) but cigs sure did. So yeah, quit with the condescending attitude.

Don't really have much to add, just agree with the suggestions to try different strains of marijuana & use a vaporizer.

it could be an allergy to marijuana. Sometimes if you consume a lot of something that you're mildly allergic to the allergy becomes worse and more pronounced. It's your body's way of suggesting that this is actually not good for you specifically and that you should stop.

Maybe the grower isn't properly flushing the nutrients from the plant before harvesting. Does the weed you react to crackle more than the weed you don't react to when it burns? That's a sign the nutes weren't flushed.

Are you getting from the same dealer every time you smoke? The one thing that popped into my head was dealers will do all sorts of shit to their gang before selling. Some spray water over it to make it wet so it scales out as more, there is even a sketchy dealer in my town (coke head who sells pot) who I've heard rumors of spraying down his dope with hairspray or something to make it scale out more. I'm thinking its probably something with the fertilizer or something the dealer is doing to the batch which you could potentially be allergic to. You'd have to look at the big picture, whoever is one of the suppliers of your town is bringing in large amounts. That means that there is a shit load of dope out there that would be coming from the same source and all possibly contain whatever it is you're allergic to. Anyways that is my two sense, good luck with this.

I really hope this isn't what it is. If it is, then why doesn't it happen every time I smoke? I smoked a joint about an hour ago and it didn't happen, but yesterday I smoked a bowl and it did. If I developed a worse allergy to marijuana, then why doesn't the swelling happen each time I smoke?
If you don't know the answer to my questions, that's okay. I realize I am not talking to a licensed allergist right now :)

I haven't really paid attention to if it crackles more. If the nutrients aren't properly being flushed, is such a reaction normal? Also, why isn't it affecting my friends the same way? (Me and my friends by from the same handful of dealers).

It could be that only you're allergic to whatever the grower is using, not your friends. Like a food allergy or something.
I'd say, just stop buying from the guy who has this weed you react to until he re-ups with different shit or just stop buying from him in general.

I am almost positive this isn't the problem. I don't buy from sketchy dealers after I bought laced shit.

I don't think this is it either. Like I said, it happens with one dealers weed more than the others (yet, it has happened with a few of their's as well).

It could be for a lot of different physiological reasons. I have a mild allergy to peanuts and I eat peanut butter all the time. If I eat it with other foods I am usually ok but if I eat a couple spoonfuls on an empty stomach my knuckles get immediately red and I get sharp pains in my stomach. It also depends on how hydrated I am and if I've consumed other foods recently that I am also allergic to.
The fact that your lips and cheeks (areas directly in contact with the smoke, the face being a common area to show signs of allergy) swell up like that make me think that it is an allergy to the weed or something in it.
does your throat swell up at all, aside from the dry mouth?

Bump for anyone willing to help me. For an update, I smoked a blunt a little while ago with weed bought from the dealer that this usually happens with. He has just re-uped and there is no swelling. I'm thinking it might have been chemicals or fertilizer involved in the old stash, but still not sure.
Also, Mari3L, did the thank on my status mean i'm in the clear for the allergy thing?

Hmm interesting question. This never happens with me. I have heard of people becoming alergic later on t things. Puffy cheeks though? Try drinking water inbetween bowls. Maybe your mouth gets irritated by hot smoke.

Its absolutely possible to develop dependencies on smoking weed. Its easy to snap out of them too because the substance isn't addictive. Have none? Smoke none. Have a lot? Smoke a lot.
Anyway, yeah I put a lot of words into your mouth and I'm sorry. But you are on a public forum on the internet asking advice about your drug problem!

But why would you want to say that? What's your agenda, Red Enemy?
So, Brosa...
1-previous weed in bowl = symptoms
2-different weed in joint = no symptoms
3-previous weed in joint = ??
4-different weed in bowl = ??
5-revolution.
I think that's how it works.
But obviously, 9mm and Mari3l may have a point. You have to look at concentrations too. There may be a threshold for producing the symptoms. Also, if it happens more when you use your bowl, there may be some other triggering factor at work, like a mild allergy to one of the components. I dunno, nickel or something, I think that's a fairly common allergy. Seriously, you need to isolate factors that could be causing this (or, alternatively, put up with it, or stop smoking).

Correct.
3-previous weed in joint = ??
Not sure. (Usually I would smoke a joint and then a bowl or two after, so idk. Sometimes it would happen, other times it wouldn't).
4-different weed in bowl = ??
So far nothing, but I have only used my bowl since then twice and took it really easy and cautiously. Mainly been smoking joints and blunts lately, and haven't had a reaction since the change.

I was not expecting that at all. You have no idea how hard I laughed when I read this.
But obviously, 9mm and Mari3l may have a point. You have to look at concentrations too. There may be a threshold for producing the symptoms.
I'm not sure about this either. I smoked half a bowl one time and had symptoms, and another time I matched a couple friends and we blew down close to an eight and nothing happened.
Also, if it happens more when you use your bowl, there may be some other triggering factor at work, like a mild allergy to one of the components. I dunno, nickel or something, I think that's a fairly common allergy.
At this point, I think this is what it is honestly.

I completely agree.

Absolutely not

Only if I absolutely have to (like if I am allergic to weed or something).

I would also maybe stop smoking weed for about a month to see if it is actually the weed and not another health problem you might be having. That would be my main concern personally- since it seems to be happening irregularly with the weed smoking.
Also something I didn't see asked, are you on any other medications? If you are, that could be it.

No, not on anything else. I did recently have my wisdom teeth removed. Not sure if this has any correlation with what is happening, but just in case I wanted to mention it. I also quit smoking cigs a week ago

A lot of people are allergic to things that they think they aren't but the allergy can cause silent damage until it becomes worse over time and it's symptoms manifest themselves visibly. I did a quick search for cannabis allergy and found a lot of results. Cannabis is like any other consumable item despite what the THC cult will tell you.

Yeah, I definitely didn't say it was impossible to be allergic to weed. My issue was with The Boss being a condescending shit head. I also don't appreciate your insinuation that I'm some gullible fuck who thinks weed is harmless and magical.
If he were allergic to weed, he would be having a reaction every time he smoked, not with just one specific pickup from one dealer. Skin irritation would likely also occur when handling it.

I think The Boss was making fun of the 'weed is cool, man' stereotype and in doing so was suggesting that responsible drug users are way cooler and def. the way to go.

If he were allergic to weed, he would be having a reaction every time he smoked, not with just one specific pickup from one dealer. They've had multiple pickups (different dealers) with varied inconsistent reactions.
Skin irritation would likely also occur when handling it.Not really true but maybe they should try rolling around in it instead of just breaking it up with their fingers or using a grinder like most people.

You said it didn't happen with the bong, which would cool down the smoke, which led me to believe that the hot smoke was irritating your mouth. The wisdom teeth thing makes perfect sense, there are little holes that will become irritated from smoke. Drink water in between, a friend of mine had the same thing happen to him. Did this happen before the wisdom teeth being taken out?

first of all, i didn't read the whole thread, i'm a bit short on time, so this one might have been mentioned.
I've heard of a couple of swellings from smoking (weed).
When this happened to me and a couple of other people (over a extended period of time, different coffeeshops, different products, even ' just' tabbaco) the swelling was caused by little wounds in the mouthe area. A hole in a teath, a cut in the gums, an irritation underneath the tong stuff like that, so small and harmless that you wouldn't even have noticed if it wasn't for the swelling.
Usually when this is the case the smoke makes the wound react and that causes a swelling. Think about tar residue sticking to the wounds or infecting it a bit. the best way to get rid of this is not to smoke until it's healed...
An other thing you can do to prevent it is filter the smoke a bit before you inhale it, i know, counter productive but think of a bong where a lot of tar will stay in the water. Weed smoke has a different chemical lay out than tobacco does, there is something to exeriment with as well.
But, i'm no docter, i just smoke a lot
if that's a plus i leave up to you..
