I have gaps when it comes to knowledge on the Chinese Civil War/ Warlord period and the Sino-Japanese War that took place in the middle of it. The most I have ever read on modern Chinese history was Red Star Over China some years back, though of course its not a referential history text.

I know there's the wikipedia page with the lists of books on the bottom, but I would like to at least see if those of you here have recommendations on resources to check on.

And no I don't need this for anything, I just want to read up on it on my free time.

In response to Red Commissar, Trotsky wrote a bunch of materials about the Chinese revolution and the Sino-Japanese War, which are available at: http://marxists.org/archive/trotsky/china/index.htm, dated between 1927 and 1938, which may be helpful.

Well if you want you can join the Marxist-Leninist-Maoist group. We have a bunch of resources there. I'll message the moderators so they know to let you in

I think something like this is like Red Star over China- it's a good series of primary documents and accounts of what was going on then. I will keep this handy once I find some reference texts.

If I join, are there actual resources or just polemics and writings by Mao on events? Again like the Trotsky accounts above it's a valuable source of first-hand experiences on it but I would like to read from a more broad treatment of it.
