Figured there might as well be a thread about it, although probably no one outside the USA holds any interest in it LOL. Anyway go 49ers etc etc

Good topic. I found an interesting article about the history capitalism, class warfare, and professional sports on the website International Communist Current (thanks RevLefter Leo for linking to this website in your signature). Here's part two of the series: The History of Sport Under Capitalism (Part Two) (http://en.internationalism.org/icconline/201301/6346/history-sport-under-capitalism-part-two-sport-decadent-capitalism-1914-today?fb_action_ids=10200124960914514&fb_action_types=og.likes&fb_ref=node%2F6346&fb_source=aggregation&fb_aggregation_id=288381481237582) Link to the first part is on the sidebar and I'm eagerly awaiting the third installment.

As for me, I never pay attention to professional sports unless it's a big event like the Superbowl, World Series, or Olympics just so I have some "water-cooler" cannon fodder to discuss with my friends who disagree with my views on professional sports. Which is that professional sports are the biggest and most lucrative means of diverting people's attention from how exploited they are and providing false conflicts for them to engage in (ever seen fans of different teams argue?) instead of engaging with each other about the only conflict that truly matters, class warfare.

The sport is not that bad.

But the hugefuckload of commercials make it impossible to watch.

The great thing about the UK coverage we have for it, no ads :thumbup1:

Not sure who I want to win really, probably prefer the Niners but as a Broncos fan if the Ravens win then at least I can say we lost (in ridiculous circumstances) to the champions

Superbowl commercials are pretty annoying and stupid, for the most part.

Yeah, I don't think there is really a way to make football "safe" the way it's currently played. Just the physics alone of your brain sloshing around in your skull makes the game not exactly safe. (That's not to say that I feel particularly sorry for pro football players, though)

Be sure and watch the commercial right before Beyonces performance. The redhead is a friend of mine. Its her first national commercial. :)

I'm outside the U.S. (Canada) and the NFL is really the only sport I follow. I'm a loyal Dolphins fan, but I'm cheering for the Ravens tonight. Might as well get that murderer Ray Lewis another ring.

The superbowl, the TV ads, enormous ticket prices, and the merchandising connected to it, are all sickening examples of the tragedy that is capitalism. To me it is nothing more than a surreal freak show. As a self-respecting Marxist I cannot bring myself to watch it or participate in anything associated with it. It is a shame because I think football is a cool sport. Just another example of capitalism taking something good and squeezing every single penny out of it from any angle possible.

While this is true, a personally lifestyle choice isn't going to stop the game from going on. I mean if you take that idea to its logical extreme you'd have to drop out of society completely to remain a 'self-respecting Marxist.'

I feel that way about football (soccer in the US). I'm thinking about giving up sports, it's helpless.

I can't say I've ever seen a stadium lose power during a major event like this. Kind of amusing seeing these players try to kill time until it gets fixed.

I feel really bad for the person who was responsible. That will certainly cost them their career. This is embarassing, but at the same time I guess it makes things interesting for the viewers, kind of like a faked kick.

In Oakland there was a huge earthquake right before the A's were going to start a game in the World Series(Which is like the equivalent of the Super Bowl for baseball, but I don't know why it's called the "World" Series when the only team that can play from outside of America is Toronto). Bridges were falling and shit, the whole stadium was shaking, it had to be delayed for like a week because of it. Pretty interesting though, everybody remembers that World Series here.

Being a Bears fan is tough sometimes. Especially when you know Baltimore doesn't have half the talent. Kapernick needs to learn he's not RGIII, so go Ravens. If they can get the lights back on (waiting for the drunk and irate fans to do Katrina style warfare if the game doesn't start again soon).

As a devoted Packers fan who flipped at table after the 49ers beat them, I can't help but root for the Ravens.

I enjoy the spectical really. Since my childhood passed me by every holiday has just kinda lost all of it's magic- exept this (I use the term "holiday" pretty liberally here).

Brain pollution. The sort of people who recite commercials word for word and thinks that that's funny are impossible to be around for more than 5 minutes.

Excellent game. It came down to so much strategy, very thoughtful finish. Both played spectacularly, one side clearly out-thought the other. San Francisco should be proud. But rarely is there a game that comes down like this to being so rewarding for the team that played its fundamentals throughout.

Someone asked me at the bakery 'if I am watching the big game'. I had no clue what the hell they were talking about. Was this an invitation to a "date", do Americans make superbowls something socially special, or what?

I managed to stay up until nearly the end of the third quarter but the powercut pretty much sent everyone else I was with to sleep and so I called it quits. still don't really understand how the game works but pretty fun as a spectacle.

Funnily enough, I was actually talking to some comrades before the games about how funny it would be if someone went to the Superdome and tossed a logging chain over the nearest transformer. Can you imagine how much lost ad revenue there would be if they had to postpone the entire game?

Just found out that Michael Oher, portrayed in the movie "Blind Side" with Sandra Bullock, played for the Ravens yesterday. I enjoyed the movie:
