This is a direct result of the inability for the radical social change that was promised (or expected) to be actualized. What was struggled for was an end to conditions which necessitated apartheid. The retention of these conditions has resulted in very obscure super structural effects, however, there cannot be a doubt that the political change was better than apartheid, i.e. that isn't to say that nothing at all was accomplished.

While I kind of appreciate the hedonism described in that article, I can also definitely see where the older generation's perspective comes from, as they actually fought against the state and in many cases faced imprisonment, torture or death. I'd shake my fist at those kids and say "have some respect you young punks"

But then again a lot of young people probably see the ANC for the joke it is, so the apathy is understandable.
