37 year old Chiekh Ndiaye dies on metro track after being chased by municipal police in Athens

In the early hours (approximately 01:00) of February 2nd, Chiekh Ndiaye died on the metro tracks at the Thiseio stop of the ISAP line in Athens. Chiekh, a street vendor from Senegal, was being chased by municipal police when he landed in the tracks. It is still unclear whether he was pushed to his death or whether he lost his balance and fell.

Moments later, friends of Chiekh gathered at the point of his death only to be dispersed and chased by riot police who arrived at the spot. Meanwhile, as reported on Athens Indymedia, the metro carriages were playing an announcement that the metro route was being altered due to an obstacle in the tracks.

I think whether he fell or was pushed, or even whether it was the intention of the police that he went onto the tracks at all, is unimportant.Whether it's racism that's primarily the motivating factor behind the police's actions in this case is perhaps not so important either, as we know well that the Greek police are quite to kill Greeks and non-Greeks. Chiekh Ndiaye died because of the repressive policies of the Greek government and the actions of its hired thugs. He was vulnerable because of the precarious situation capitalism had forced him into, first in Senegal and then in Greece.

There is no practical expression of the feeling of solidarity with his friends and family that makes sense except to work towards the abolition of the inhuman system - with its all-too-human representatives - that killed him and thousands like him every day.

Why were they chasing him?

Why were they chasing him?

Considering the current state of Greece i would be willing to bet money that it was because he wasn't white.
