Haven't posted in a long while, but gotta give props to the doctor for being the first MAJOR candidate to talk about breaking up the media!

Dean Takes on Big Media

Howard Dean is making the message of the media reform movement part of his campaign--not just calling for overturning the FCC rules but also calling for breaking up existing media conglomerates.

Listen to the front-running candidate on MSNBC's Hardball with Chris Matthews on December 1:

Matthews: There are so many things that have been deregulated. Is that a wrong trend and would you reverse it?

Dean: I would reverse it in some areas. First of all, eleven companies in this country control ninety percent of what ordinary people are able to read and watch on their television. That's wrong. We need to have a wide variety of opinions in every community. We don't have that because of Michael Powell and what George Bush has tried to do the FCC.

Matthews: As a public policy, would you bring industrial policy to bear and break up these conglomerations of power?...How about large media enterprises?

Dean: The answer to that is yes. I would say there is too much penetration by single corporations in media markets all over this country. We need locally-owned radio stations. There are only two or three radio stations left in the state of Vermont where you can get local news anymore. The rest of it is read and ripped from the AP.

Matthews: So what are you going to do about it? You're going to be President of the United States, what are you going to do?

Dean: What I'm going to do is appoint people to the FCC that believe democracy depends on getting information from all portions of the political spectrum, not just one.

Matthews: Are you going to break up the giant media enterprises in this country?

Dean: Yes, we're going to break up giant media enterprises. That doesn't mean we're going to break up all of GE. What we're going to say is that media enterprises can't be as big as they are today...To the extent of even having two or three or four outlets in a single community, that kind of information control is not compatible with democracy.

****

Breaking up media conglomerates is a campaign that millions of Americans--of all political stripes--are embracing. Perhaps the most hopeful example of this is a growing media democracy movement--working to reclaim the airwaves for citizens. Even mainstream media is waking up to the issue. Recently, Lou Dobbs of CNN announced the results of his online poll about media conglomerates. According to his survey, ninety-six percent of those polled said that big media conglomerates should be broken up. Only four percent were happy with them. Maybe this democratic revolution will be televised after all.

If Dean sticks to his guns and is elected president, look for a new country. Sadly, I doubt PNAC (Project for the New American Century (http://www.newamericancentury.org/)) will allow his election.

Put this on top of the fact that Dean stated in November that we should re-regulate corporations and the fact this week he called the DLC - the Republican Wing of the Democratic Party - I sense the Washington Insiders are HOPING Dean loses to Bush.

I'm likin' this. I'm likin' this ALOT.

Now, if He DOES manage to become president, somehow, the question is, will he have the gall to follow through?

he cant. In order to become president the big companies have to let you be.. you think anyone up there gives a damn about voting or other fair things? look at the 2000 vote.

2004 i think Bush has won - no matter what or who runs.

I could be wrong though... In 2004, or 8 (hope 4 tho!) Bush may loose. I think that is the way we should look at it;

It isn't a case of Dean or anyone winning, its a case of GWB loosing. This could come about for many reasons; economy, domestic issues, foreign etc etc

Lets keep our fingers crossed comrades

I heard Dean speak of breaking up these media conglomerates a while back when he was on Hardball on MSNBC. I'm glad he put the issue out there, but who knows if he'd follow through. Dean says a lot of good things (and some bad things as well) but who knows if he keep his promises?

It's promising that he seems to want to change the Democratic Party. At best, it would only be band-aids on the sore of this Earth we call capitalism but at least it would be an improvement. The danger of course is to not get complacent and settle for petty reforms.

Do you honestly think any of the other runners that stand a chance will be much different? It's easy to see right past their rhetoric, Kucinich and Sharpton are the only ones that could change things (Especially the Imperialism of U.S. policies), and it is no coincidence that they don't stand a chance.

My recommendation: Stop hoping

Pardon?
I said the US is more likely to get a new president, when GWB looses an election...
Not the other way around. (i think you misunderstood me)

will he follow through if elected? definitly not, remember the capitalist class controls the united states, not a president or congress. Recent changes to media control from the FCC are most likely to continue. You cant hold much hope in any promises from someone wanting to be "elected" in a bourgeosie government, remeber Clinton, one of the worst presidents in history in my opinion, promised universal health care during his first election, 12 years later and we are fucked over even more by his administration. expect the bourgeosie to gain more control over more media.

THIS IS A JOKE RIGHT? HOW CAN YOU BE FOR DEAN PENALIZING BUSINESSES FOR MERGING INTO A LARGER ONE?

ITS COMPETITION, AND THE OTHERS THAT CANT COMPETE EITHER MERGE OR DIE,
LEMME GUESS, YOU ARE THE KIND OF PERSON THAT INSISTS ON PLAYING SOCCER AS LONG AS NOBODY WINS OR LOSES, THIS WAY THERE IS EQUAL DISTRIBUTION OF WINNING.

WHAT A JOKE,

IT GOES AGAINST HUMAN NATURE TO NOT BE COMPETITIVE

AND THIS IS REALLY FUNNY: "and no enemy can crush us while we can crush any enemy"
I THINK REAGAN CRUSHED THEM ALREADY, SO MUCH FOR THE "PEOPLE"
