Today was the 40th anniversary of Roe v Wade, the decision of the United States Supreme Court to allow some forms of legal abortion. This was a landmark ruling that benefited countless people, but unfortunately, women's reproductive freedoms have been under attack since that day by religious fundamentalists and other enemies of justice and equality. I thought it might be interesting to start a thread to discuss the 40 years of legal abortion in the United States and the political struggles past and present over this very important issue. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

I was going to start a thread about this after I watched a reactionary, online show in which the hosts mourned the "deaths" of millions of non-sentient things, but you beat me to it. Why do I watch conservative online shows? Because I honestly have nothing better to do.

Well, even if it's merely evidence that your life is bereft of anything to do, I admire your fortitude. I lost the ability to willing expose myself to anti-abortion rhetoric a long time ago. The debate always swirls in such predicable circles, and the right-wing side never fails to say things that are horribly misogynistic. By the way, pleased to meet you! I just signed up on this forum tonight. :)

Good to meet you too, though I must admit I'm not brave enough to actually engage in conversations with right wingers about abortion. I don't like having typical anti-feminist insults thrown at me. I just watch right wing shows and get pissed off about all the bullshit they spout

I always thought it rather ironic how many right-wingers who oppose abortion are also usually against social programs that provide aid to young mothers and their children; WIC, food stamps, medical insurance provided by the state, etc.

I think that shows how inherently selfish many of them are.
