Just saw Lincoln and loved it. My only objection would be Thadeus Stevens climbing into bed with Lydia Hamilton Smith, as I'm not aware of any proof that it happened. I can't recall seeing a movie before where people applauded at the end, as they did here. Also, there was a lot of laughter whenever a character made a disparaging comment about Democrats, this being a GOP-dominated county. I guess they all assume the two parties are the same after all these years...

Agreed, I enjoyed this film so much I ended up seeing it twice. This is probably the first time I've ever seen anybody try to portray Lincoln as even semi-human (as opposed to this god-like creature that is incapable of lying, values all human life and eats southerners for breakfast). True that part near the end with Thaddeus Stevens and Lydia Hailton Smith kinda ruined it's near perfect historical accuracy but I guess that's just what you get with movies. The part that most surprised me with this was how much humor they managed to incorporate into it without the movie becoming stupid- it perfectly blended everything together.
I'd give it a 10/10

Dammit, they never played it in my city's theatre. I want to see it badly.

By God, I'd have it out with that scalawag theater-owner! Lincoln was a good KY man, the Todd's were a fine KY family....hell, even Davis himself was a KYian:mad:!

So you've seen OogieLoves then?
I have Lincoln downloaded, gonna watch it soon. I hope it's atleast as good as Abraham Lincoln vs Zombies and definitely better than Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.

They left out the part where Lincoln helps Bill and Ted with their history report - other than that it was a pretty good representation of his life.
Ok, I haven't seen it yet. I'm still skeptical that I'll be able to watch it and not politically crindge, but I'll give it a shot at some point - I like historical films and Danny-Day, so why the hell not?

reminded me of this - how hollywood would make a film about the miners strike- how hollywood made a film about Lincoln

My history professor said she loved it and that it was pretty historically accurate but she thinks there should have been more about black people in it.

I wonder what the good professor thinks is more about black people than the struggle to pass the 13th ammendment?

Meaning, there should have been more actual black people in it, specifically regarding how black people related to the passing of the thirteenth amendment, the role they played in the movement toward it and getting it passed, how it affected them on a personal and existential level, those kinds of things. More actual coverage of the black experience during the time.

That's being saved for the prequel: Lincoln-The First Term!

Well, that would be a whole other move in itself. This movie was about the backdealings that go on in politics, which even Abe was guilty of. Don't get me wrong, Lincoln was a fully admirable character, but it is great to see him in a more fleshed out and ambivalent version. I loved it.

Did the movie make it clear that the abolition of slavery was a political move meant to preserve the union and how Lincoln actually preferred blacks to never integrate fully in American society and be sent back to Africa?

I definitely enjoyed the movie and thought it was super moving. I cried a lot at different points of it. I especially liked the depiction of Thaddeus Stevens. That said, I think it still offered a sanitized version of the racial politics of the day. I would have liked to have seen a more frank depiction of Honest Abe's racism. And more screen time for the Black characters would have been nice, too.

In the end I think Lincoln would've done whatever it took to preserve the union.

I liked it. Wasn't TOO sentimental, which is usually what puts me off Spielburg.
Daniel Day-Lewis was phenominal, but I was still rooting on Phoenix for the Academy awards.
