Humans are egomaniacs.. does it have to be so? Do are people have to think about themselves and their family first? Can people stop their ego from killing the world?

I know some of you will answer with names like che and jesus but I'm talking about humans in general...

The christian faith would have you believe that it is natural inherent necessaity to Sin,

but really its the natural need to be competitive that we all have, including many species of animal,

as to the other part yes it can be stopped but (i think) in this world at the moment it would require a dictator to impose such a controlling thing.

yes, educating people about the bad side of capitalising and needind to be competitive, it has begun but really we need capitalism to convince the rest of the world that it is failing, this is the hard part

But why change it? Why rid the world of egomaniacs?

The way I see it, there is order through diversity. There are egomaniacs, and there are those that suffer from very low self-esteem, just as there are extroverts and introverts. Why shift the balance?

For every egomaniac you might have someone who is the exact opposite, and when there exists that situation one might either cancel out the other (figuratively), or neutralize his/her impact on the world.

Why get rid of the bad to preserve the good? Are egomaniacs dangerous people? Or merely insecure people?

Very True. But it can be said that some humans are egoistic and some are egomaniacs...generally, what humans think about are only themselves and it is a sad reality

It is natural for humans to think of family highly. After all, that's the goal of life, no? To reproduce and spread your genes?

It would make it a lot easier for socialism to be established if people weren't as selfish as they are now. I don't believe that there is a balance, or if there is, capitalism is throwing it way off. Egotism is all but encouraged in America's system, and introverts like myself are shunned.

Indee Mike, I agree. Keep in mind the Zapatista motto, "Everything for everyone, nothing for ourselves" and that is what socialism is all about.

Everybody is born selfish. It is our natural instinct for survival, it's what kept us as the leading species of the earth. But in this day and age when we no longer have to defend ourselves from our neighbour, is selfishness really neccessary to survive? I would argue the answer to that question to be no, although the fact remains that we are still born with the selfishness in our genes. We can only become more altruistic as we become more educated and nurtured, which is ultimately the way we're going. Of course some people will always stay the same.

considering humans are the only species who actually are capable of having an ego I tend to agree with this assumption. that humans are egomaniacs.

I'd say humans are idiots, but since I am something of a human, I will hold on saying that. the vast majority of humans are idiots then. I, maybe one oher person, are the exception. fucking idiots.
