[Questionable]

I just got this in my private message inbox. Am I being paranoid or does this seem fishy?


Dear Questionable,

I really hope you don't mind me messaging you like this, but i'm a research student in the final year of my doctorate at the University of Bolton in the UK, and i am in desperate need of people from left wing discussion groups such as this to fill in a questionnaire for me. As part of my research i am conducting a comparative investigation into group influence in the communication mediums of online discussion groups, online virtual environments and real life.

It would be great if you would consider completing a questionnaire, but of course i understand if you would rather not.

Seems to be legit, and no personal info is given. Several people have filled in the questionaire, and others have ignored it.

A while back there were these Dutch students that had a similar questionnaire. It turned out to be quite fishy, although I forgot the details. I believe it had something to do with the data being used for police/security research.

And what do we really know about the purpose of this student's questionnaire?

What has always applied, Questionable has never been able to see the CU? Apocalyptic Bolshevik Insanitarians can't see the CU? Marxist-Leninists can't see the CU? People with 602 posts can't see the CU? People who joined in Jan 2012 can't see the CU?

I don't know what the restrictions are, so knowing that the unknown restrictions are the same as they were before when I also didn't know what they are, doesn't help much in knowing what they are.

There was nothing malicious in it.

Honestly it was written in a way that made me think it was originally written for Liberal-Progressive groups, and they were just sending it to us as well. Either that or they have no idea what communist/anarchist thought is all about.

It kept asking shit about what we thought about "what sort of taxes we think the government should impose" and other stuff that simply doesn't relate in the least to anyone outside of the political mainstream. There was nothing in there that could have been taken as a question written for a communist.

They may be, I might be in a minority; I really have no way of knowing. But whether it's well-known or not, I didn't know that you need more than 1200 posts to access the Committed Users Forum.

I filled it out. Seemed harmless and I gave him/her some feedback while pointing out that the questionnaire was framed in a way that didn't capture far left politics. I got a response too so I don't think it's a bot or anything.
