View Full Version : What's Revleft opinion on bronies?

Einkarl

So what is it comrades? Cool, odd, indifferent? What do revolutionaries think?

I'd like to hear from some bronies and non bronies.

I'd also like for any of you sociology buffs out there to explain the phenomena of of these fandoms from a sociological point of view.

'bronies' are hella annoying.

people can like what they like but then you have people proselytizing about a children's tv show and it is really annoying.

I love My Little Pony.
I used to call myself a brony, but then I found out how obnoxious some bronies are (and I discovered some disturbing things in the fandom).
I mean, I watch the show a lot, I even have some of the toys, but that's as far as I take it, besides recommending it to friends I think would enjoy it.

I have to say the MLP fan community is pretty cool for analyzing class relations within MLP and being cynical on how good living in Equestria would be.

It's just kinda odd, I'd offer up an equally strange example and say "I don't care if full grown men want to watch a cartoon intended for little girls or...." but really it has raised the bar in weird social phenomenons.

Why would a grown man watch a show for little girls? It's creepy and weird.

Aurora

I used to watch MLP, it's a really cute fun show and allows men to express some femininity in a relatively socially acceptable way, what's the problem?

Why would a grown man watch a show for little girls? It's creepy and weird.
You don't think that expresses certain expectations of how the genders should act and what they should enjoy?

Psy

Well MLP:FiM is outside the mould of traditional shows aimed at girls. In the previous My Little Pony series (and the movie) they were limited by the fact they made the ponies fairly powerless, yet in MLP:FiM the main cast of ponies are heroes that have saved the entire kingdom from major threats four times now.

My friend is a brony. He doesn't wear pony gear. He doesn't go to conventions. He isn't a massive man-child. He has no comment on the people that do go to conventions though. You would really never know it.

It's kind of parallels with the way people view homosexuals. If people only notice the really flamboyant gay people, then they don't realize that there are gay people that aren't flamboyant like that. Not to say anything is wrong with being flamboyant or gay, obviously.

Jack

I think if you're a grown man watching My Little Pony you have issues, don't try to turn this into a battle over gender roles. Especially those self declared "bronies" who make a little girls show into a subculture.

Whats wrong with analyzing kids shows? Marxists analyze how the working class is portrayed in popular culture yet why should be a line saying kids shows are off limits to such scrutiny?

I've never really watched it, so I can't judge. Echoing the opinions of others here, though, I have no real problem with people liking them, I don't think it shows that you have 'issues'.

The only real problem I have with it is when they start berating you for not liking them and acting as if you're vehemently against them.

We are overanalyzing every fucking bit of this universe.
Analyzing classes, gender, economics and politics is logical.
But for pete's sake, why even brother to do it to something so significant as a kids-show!?

Think it's sad that adults watch it? The true sadness is this topic.

If you're worried about people watching a show about friendship and magic i'd suggest you may need some perspective, did you know there are shows about murder and war? there are even games where you can kill your friends!

A 'battle' is a bit dramatic, you were the one who brought gender into it by saying 'boy likes girl things? creepy and weird!'. I actually don't particularly mind if men watch desperate housewives or women wear trousers i assume you don't either so why an exception in this case?

About 10 or 12 years ago, when my eldest was watching Pokemon, I was seriously trying to engage an artist friend of mine with the idea of doing a similar style of thing where a gang of kids and their magic monsters wandered the world as travelling Anarchist-Communist bandits helping local villagers battle their evil overlords.

Once a brony told me to watch it. I failed to see anything "magical" about the show that makes it different from other kids shows. People mention "oh the story" or whatever but really nope; it's a kid show like many other contemporary kids show.

But yo "bronies" as a culture are pretty fucking toxic.

I remember going to the student union at my university one day and seeing a bunch of mcdonalds happy meals stacked on a table as I turned the corner into the room I would hang out in. As soon as I stepped in this guy jumped out of the stack like a manchild-in-the-box. a bunch of these really awful, obnoxious dudes basically bought a bunch of happy meals to get my little pony toys and then made a castle with them in the middle of the student union in front of everyone to play with their mlp toys.

I've not watched MLP and have no real interest in doing so, but I do find it fascinating that significant numbers of young men are going crazy over a cast of pastel-coloured cartoon ponies. I didn't see that coming, to be honest. I would have thought that the pervasiveness of heteronormative aesthetics would prevent something like that occurring.

I like to take it as a hopeful sign that the interests of young men are beginning to break the boundaries of what is conventionally expected or acceptable. Hopefully this kind of boundary-breaking will extend to clothing, and I'll be able to fool around with ravishing young men in skirts (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/WholesomeCrossdresser) before I get too old.

Someone mentioned Adventure Time - I was introduced to that series by a friend, and good grief is it entertaining. It kind of reminds of me of the imaginary worlds I spent the majority of my childhood in as a kid - I was that kind of daydreaming child who looked at the clouds and saw a fleet of space battleships hovering in the sky, who looked at the rifts and folds of mountains and saw sleeping dragons. You may have gathered that I haven't exactly grown out of that habit - the imaginary worlds I construct as an adult are deeper and more complex, but just as fanciful.

So yeah, while I personally don't find MLP appealing, I can certainly understand why others might.

Meet the Bronies: Military men gather as fans of My Little Pony

A group of U.S. servicemen are coming together to share a passion for a television show based off of the popular My Little Pony toy.

These military men call themselves 'Bronies' as they wear patches on their uniforms identifying themselves as fans of the show, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.
The phenomenon recently came to light as men in uniform joined the 4,000 fans of the show geared toward young girls gathered at Secaucus, New Jersey earlier this month for the 2012 BronyCon.

Passion: These military men call themselves 'Bronies' as they wear patches on their uniforms identifying themselves as fans of the show, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic
The show's fanbase among members of the military began about two years ago when the show first began to air.
Now, more than 1,800 people have 'liked' a Facebook page called 'Military Bronies.'

The page highlights various members of the military in patrol situations while wearing the My Little Pony patch.
There are variations of the patch that typically include a cloud with a red, yellow and blue lightning bolt.

I'm not a brony and not part of the fandom, but I have watched the first season and it was quite good, far better than most shows for kids.

And I think it's positive if this show and it's subculture help men come in contact with and be proud of their "female" sides.

A lot of my friends are bronies. I considered myself a brony for over a year, but now…I dun know. I have been losing interest in the show, especially after the lacklustre finale of season III. I was attracted to the messages that it conveyed, some of the humour, the notable characters, the story lines, &c., but I am numb now.

The show attracts a wide audience, so naturally the audience is pretty variable. I dun think any less of them for liking a ‘show for little girls,’ because even if that were solely what Friendship is Magic aimed for, that does not mean that being a brony is wrong for non‐girls. A lot things attract unlikely fans no matter what, and it is difficult to help.

Friendship is Magic is a show for everybody, not just girls.
