Absolutely repulsive is my only reaction to this. The rape culture that is so heavily ingrained and fomented in our student athletics needs to be put to an end, and teach these macho douches how to behave like human beings. Further, this cover up looks to be even deeper than meets the eye. Kudos to Anonymous for standing up for womyn's rights!

I'm clueless as to why many people here in the States are angry with Anonymous. If I'm not mistaken, they released the names of the minors accused of the rape, via hacking?

Are the people who are angry about the names being released angry because the accused are still minors themselves? The way I see it, they committed a very, very adult-type of crime, so treat them as such.

haven't followed the case much, but my guess with the anger directed at anonymous is because the accused are all a bunch of football jocks.

A women gets gangraped in India.

Reaction: "OMG THAT CULTURE IS SO BACKWARDS THEY NEED OUR HELP!!"

A women gets raped in the USA:

Reaction: "What was she wearing? It's just a few bad apples! They're only joking about rape, come on guyz!"

And that's if the stories receive equal attention, which the more surely never do or else white guys in the west wouldn't be able to pat themselves on the back so much.

Sorry to split hairs but I played football from knee high to high school and I never met any rapists. This whole story is really shitty though.

I think people identify it as something to do with student athletes when the reality is that the rape culture is everywhere but the athletes tend to receive immunity from repurcussions as a results of societal privileges.

eh i dont agree with the idea of rape culture and i dont like discussing rape on revleft in general, but i think its ridiculous to assert that there is a widespread problem with youth sports somehow encouraging rape

idk about encouraging rape but school sports programs sure do seem to make some people absolutely untouchable. I knew a lot of cool people in my high school's sports program. Then there were the guys who shoved an elementary-school aged special needs student into a shower and urinated on him. I doubt the football program at my school did anything to encourage them to do this but I do know that no one did a thing about it beyond the school settling out of court over the incident.

It really depends on the school I think, my school had a reputation as a big football school but when I played the administration was really up our ass like stalking our facebooks and shit. Now granted had there been a scandal they may have covered it up to save face or something but at the time it felt like we were under the microscope and couldn't get away with anything.

Yeah I agree, I think. What puzzled me is that our school was renowned for being really shitty at football

Not to mention, male athletics very often promotes the kind of hyper-masculinity that's part of the problem.

Couple this with the many documented issues of group mentality, then encourage these actions from a position of authority, then cover up the consequences, and it's not hard to see how this all unfolded.

Honestly I thought there would be more discussion on this topic here.

The level of emotion and fanatical dedication in football, more than any other sport, has always struck me as particularly disturbing. It is a blatant simulation of war that is equally as capable of engendering a blind, aggressive fervor over nothing and raising it to an obscene frequency. The players are deified and touted by a rabidly supportive media. The role of women in the event is to debase themselves on the sidelines for the "morale" and general amusement (ie. sexual gratification) of the men. Add to this the alcohol and drugs that are ubiquitous of the sport and you have veritable legions of rapists-in-waiting that are not only entitled, but also "uninhibited".

I was informed of most of the details of this case by some friends of mine, but I still haven't been able to bring myself to sit down and go through the actual documentation of it yet. I've been kind of on edge all week and it might just send me over.

The incident is evidently disgusting. I wonder how can anyone think this is not rape.

Some of the comments on the deadspin article show that the problem is very deep. Some people seem to think that the solution for rape is more rape:

I hope these boys find out about being on the other side of rape in prison.

hope they become bubbas ***** . don't drop the soap boys

Oh please, please, please, I hope they drop the soap. Let some real dudes show them how "dead" his butt will feel after they take care of him.

That video will get those rapists more butt-fucked than...something not funny that gets butt-raped.

When he goes to jail for being an accessory to rape, I imagine he'll know what it's like to feel a "wang in the butthole."

etc.

People who make comments like that are certainly a part of the problem too.

The team's website has been hacked, and the hackers have divulged the following message:

Greetings Citizens of the world, we are #Anonymous, we are #KnightSec. On December 23, 2012, we released a video detailing the story of a young rape victim in Steubenville Ohio who was attacked by the Big Red High School football team and raped and kidnapped carried party to party unconcious and intoxicated. Only 2 members were charged with the actual crimes, when everyone present was guilty.
In an effort to prove this, we gained access to the schools website via CPANEL login http://tinypic.com/r/ot0wok/6, and the webmaster James "Jim" Parks http://www.facebook.com/BIGREDMANOWAR personal email http://tinypic.com/r/2gwbclj/6 which we promptly found multiple nude photographs in.
We in turn locked him out of his own email, and backed up the contents to the web to preserve evidence. http://www.filehosting.org/file/details/405512/Emails.zip
We strongly urge local law enforcement to look into this email as possible child porn could be present.
We found one photo in this email that strongly resembles Savannah Dietrich http://imgur.com/D2UuS, https://www.facebook.com/Freedom4Savannah/photos_stream who was a victim of rape in louisville ohio with the same circumstances as Steubenville.
These photos and more can be found in the download link. We assure you that all photos are legitimate and can provide password access to email accounts on request by officials however they will not be released to the public for fear of data corruption.
By finding this photo in the email above we believe that Mr. Parks who is also a football team booster has been sending, possibly hiring the team to go to different parties and send him pics of girls they take advantage of.
The boys have even dubbed themselves Rape Crew, and further evidence can be seen in the video here: http://rutube.ru/video/5e440e56a0bf56bc88f6d9d59ed08db0/#.UNnMhonjm59.. We ask that the proper authorities do not allow the coverup of this potential criminal ring and that the victims do not go unprotected.
We are anonymous, We are knightsec, the wicked should expect us.So it can be actually worse than a few rapists raping a girl for the sake of it; there may be wider implications.

Anyone who doesn't believe rapeculture is a thing should read this. I'll add more commentary when I'm feeling more coherent.

This is honestly just disgusting, it sickens me the way human beings treat one another. :( Has anymore news came out, about the claims that anonymous was alluring to? That potentially one of the school teachers was involved with this 'rape crew.'

I had to read that twice just to make sure I didn't miss something. What these guys did is fucked up on so many levels I don't know where to start. How NOBODY intervened is beyond me. How do you just let that shit happened? Sure someone may say "Oh they're only 17, what do they know." I was 17 once too, and sure I was an asshole, but I wasn't a "let a person get raped before my eyes" kind of asshole. You have got to be a special kind of fucked up to just let that shit go down right in front of you.

EVAN WESTLAKE: Poor Evan was also so scared and “stunned” about what was happening that he had to pause for a moment to post to social media, and upload a video on Youtube. How about on his way to Mark Cole’s house? Was he scared and stunned while his friend was videotaping sex acts involving the victim? Didn’t he know then that this was wrong? How stunned was he when he uploaded video to his Youtube account in which Michael Nodianos gave a play by play of what was happening?

It disgusts me how they're all so 'scarred and stunned' now and boo fucking hoo. They should fucking thank whatever gods they believe in their kneecaps haven't been blown to bits...

There's a thread on the event in question here (http://www.revleft.com/vb/steubenville-rape-case-t177532/index.html?p=2562135#post2562135)in Ongoing Struggles. Personally, I think that thread should be moved here.
