The FBI is warning police nationwide to be alert for people carrying almanacs, cautioning that the popular reference books covering everything from abbreviations to weather trends could be used for terrorist planning.

I do hope that such people carrying books containing the dangerous ideas of commuinism and/or anarchism are already on this alert list. Quite frankly, I would be appalled to find out that they aren't. :redstar2000:

this just proves that’s there's a new front an information struggle, to win we have to inform everyone of the truths of our conditions.

you mean they're like really code books? thats cool. like right out of bond. remember in 'From Russia With Love" when spectre used a russian intelligence officer to smuggle a code deciphering machine ( a lector?! ) so that their agent, who bond asked "Which lunatic asylum did they recruit you from?", could steal it from james, only to be strangled after bond tricked him into trading some gold for a cigarette.

my favourite part is when the russian agent is saying over and over "I love you! I love you!" and connery, in his wierd fucked up accent goes 'Shhh-uaaa."

or what about in goldfinger when he goes "Do you expect me talk Gold-fingarhhh?" and Goldfinger goes 'No mister bond, I expect you to die!"

or, fuck it. you get the idea.

when i saw this thread i thought it must refer to things like "old moore's almanack", and other such astrological works!

it's daft! what next, when raiding a flat pay particular attention to any reference books or phone directories you may find? i very much doubt that the ira or red army faction or pretty much any other "terrorist" group you can think of uses reference works to determine what to attack. and i'm sure al qaeda didn't use whitaker's almanac (or an american counterpart) to decide on the wtc. any coffeetable book about nyc could have done!

in london the ira have bombed hammersmith bridge several times (tho without destroying it). i don't know why - but i do know that it's not the sort of place to occur in many almanacs!

the fbi are barking.

I really thought that when I clicked that link I was going to be taken to The Onion (http://www.theonion.com) or White House (http://www.whitehouse.org) I really didn't think that this would be a real story on yahoo from the Associated Press.

The FBI noted that use of almanacs or maps may be innocent
thank god for that or else we would have had to bust and jail a bunch of 5th graders doing reasearch papers.

"While we doubt that our editorial content would be of particular interest to people who would wish to do us harm, we will certainly cooperate to the fullest with national authorities at any level they deem appropriate," publisher of The Old Farmers Almanac, John Pierce said.
Translated:
"Although it is obvious that the FBI and Homeland defense are batshit insane, we will cooperate because we know A. What kind of cooperation is really needed on our part and B. They have guns and are allowed to shoot and all we have is a bunch of fucking thick nerdy books".
