neato thanks for the suggestions so far. lots of things i already listen to (that's alright) and lots of things i haven't heard before.

But yeah I"m seriously looking for anything. Old, new, whatever. If you want to see what I listen before suggesting, just pm me and I'll link you to my last.fm

but when in doubt just suggest the most "out-there" shit possible that you love and that you feel is on the periphery of everyone else's attention u no?

Mate, I know you didn't specifically say you wanted obscure bands for this list, but if you do from some reason, differently check out Blair Crimmins and the Hookers and Laurena Segura from the above list, plus The Social (who are a post-punk revival band Bilan turned me on to a few years back). All of them are real small time but also pretty good.

Bruce Springsteen - Wrecking Ball, Darkness on the Edge of Town, Born to Run The River, Nebraska. (Heartland Rock, Rock 'n' Roll, Soul, Blues & Rhythm)
Frank Turner - England, Keep My Bones; Love, Ire & Song. (Folk Rock/Punk Rock)
Buddy Holly/Chirping Crickets - Top Hits (very early Rock 'n' Roll)
The Replacements - Tim (alt. Rock)
The Gaslight Anthem - The '59 Sound (Punk/Heartland Rock)
The Velvet Underground & Nico (self-titled album; this is pretty much genesis for hipster indie rock, and it's good).

white label classics - ruff sqwad -- just been released, but it's a selection of instrumental grime tunes made by a bunch of kids (like, 13 - 14 year olds) in the early 00s. you might not believe me when i say some of them are genuinely beautiful, but check this out...

xCFaycvFD6Y

seriously one of my most favourite pieces of music ever; a pure slice of melancholia.

the transfiguration of blind joe death - john fahey -- you need to hear everything fahey released, but this is the best introduction. you might not think you can do much with a steel string guitar, but boy - fahey makes it sing. plus he was playing around with the blues tradition in a really interesting way, taking influence from modern classical composition, indian classical music, musique concrete, etc.

ReW9uUYm-DA

calling out of context - arthur russell -- classically trained cellist who worked at various points with phillip glass, allen ginsberg and ravi shankar and then went on to create some of the strangest disco music ever. i once heard this described as 'dance music for people who like sad songs' and that makes sense. some of the lyrics are so painfully beautiful in their observations of love an' all that, but the songs are so upbeat you can't help but move your feet.

kDX0I_14OY0

consignment: favor for a favor - boldy james -- it's hard to describe hip hop now without using a whole load of boring adjectives that make it sound shit. this is kinda like lil b when he's serious, sorta slightly wonky hip hop, 'cept he mostly raps about dealing coke. anyway, it's good, pretty long and he gave it away for free. not gonna complain.

3iB4sTZhkq0

roxy music - roxy music -- brian eno making weird sounds, bryan ferry crooning like a nuts cabaret singer, skronking saxes and proto-punk guitars. i'm making it sound pretty messy but this is just an amazing, clever pop album. and i was sceptical to begin with.

m-zSnO7sbXg

c'est chic - chic / we are family - sister sledge / diana - diana ross -- i'm including all of these together because for me they're all basically nile rodger's albums. you'll either know these albums and love 'em, or know of them an wonder why i'm recommending them ("disco? pah!"). but seriously, nile rodger's guitar playing is just sublime - he does so much, so well, while seemingly doing so little. if that makes no sense it will when you listen to the albums. including some lesser known tunes in the links...

2I_HdvgsWhM

O6ZNcIJmn5I

UsoRL5X0l8E

give me your love - sisters love -- ray charles former backing singers, inc. merry clayton who did the wailing on the back 'gimme shelter' formed a band, released a string of singles and then disappeared. this comp puts them all together, and they're amazing... (the record in this video - 'the mowest story' is also incredible, check it out)

Unexpect. You can either go with Fables of the Sleepless Empire or its predecessor In a Flesh Aquarium. Some real crazy shit right here (if you have a taste for metal; I'll just assume you do and proceed with other stuff from this genre).

Also try:

Cynic - Focus
Thy Catafalque - Rengeteg
Spawn of Possession - Incurso (not really "out there" for my standards; but dizzying death metal nontheless)

Maybe I'll add something later.

The guy behind Bomb The Music Industry used to be in a ska-punk band called Arrogant Sons of *****es (http://youtu.be/Pg5YkqKGBJE). They're good. If you like them check out Big D and the Kids Table (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4856mV7uSUE), too, they're okay. And you can't mention ska without Streetlight Manifesto's Everything Goes Numb (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bNq_SpKih2I) which is like ska sent down by the unholy ska gods and satan himself and the future ghost of ozzy osbourne for us mere mortals to try to comprehend but we can't so we just listen to it and shed tears of joy at its absolute perfection.

I'll throw in
Defeater - Travels (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y27to2GrZS0)
One Eyed God Prophecy - self-titled (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wEdhjrMK-EA)

The Flaming Tsunamis - Focus the Fury (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QMM-vMAeDpM)
Fugazi - Repeater (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LFlUFwbWXEs)
Wolves in the Throne Room - Diadem of 12 Stars (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ni08ILDUHVU) (these folks are amazing, seriously)

And though this is not from the album i recommended, Civil Civic is a nice electronic band. I dont know how to classify it. But, i love it.
