Nicolae Ceaușescu was murdered in a capitalist counterrevolution on December 25, 1989, 23 years ago today. The overthrow of the proletarian dictatorship presided over by Ceausescu represented a huge set back for the global working class. Although he did make some mistakes, I consider him to be a great socialist and revolutionary. He's up there with the greats like Enver Hoxha, Deng Xiaoping, Kim Jong-il, Pol Pot, Mikhail Gobechav, Tony Blair, Bob Avakian, and Barack Obama.

IMO the Ceausescus deserved to be removed from office and perhaps incarcerated in the event they were convicted following something that resembled a legitimate trial. Process-wise, the trial of Nicolae and Elena Ceausescu was a farce and a mockery of justice. Their execution was little more than murder under color of law.

The fact that modern day Romania somehow manages to seem terrible in comparison to the Ceaucescu-era is sure a feat I am amazed that they managed.
I did somewhat like his urban redevelopment plans though, though they were never done according to the actual intentions (Systematisation, the initiated redevelopment of Bucharest). One of few good things to come out of that era in Romania.

I love that video of him giving the last speech he ever gave, when he realizes that people are actually booing him in the crowd. That awesome deer-in-the-headlights look...if only all tyrants got to experience that kind of terror.

I was actually there, which obviously meant I was too far away to see his facial expression.

Define "real country". I tried making prole dictatorship with some friends in my backyard one time until mom called me in. Still didn't fail as hard as this dude.

Trust me, devrim is like that "bert is evil" website, it wouldnt surprise me to see him in the background of a painting of the Paris commune or a picture of the kronstad sailors. The dude has some serious revolutionary backstory.

Nothing of the sort here, I was flying from Damascus to London with Tarom so we had to change in Bucharest. They had double booked the ongoing flight, which apparently happened quite often with Tarom, so we had to stay there. As we had nothing to do, we were just looking around the city when it all happened.

What happened later? Was there a lot of violence? How did you get out of that square?

There was a bit of trouble, but most of the violence seemed to happen a bit later by which time we were quite safely sitting in a bar drinking beer.

Not as I remember. There seemed to be a bit of confusion at times, which is what you expect on a huge demonstration, but I don't think we heard shooting until much later in the evening.

I don't care what you all say. Ceausescu had the best lips in the world, even better than the catfish I ate yesterday. That's all that really matters.

Heaven forbid a tyrant gets a extra-judicial bullet in the head.
not that what came after in Romania was particularly good.
